FedEx orders 6 A300-600Fs

Post by HorsePower »

US parcel deliverer FedEx ordered today six A300-600Fs, including undisclosed options for additional planes. They will be delivered in 2007.

Regards

Seb.

Wow!!!! Thought that the A300 was a very old plane whose production line was discontinued...

New or 2nd hand?

FX also took 18 options for 2008-10 deliveries. The order is indeed
designed to keep the A300F line open. So, there is still a chance that
A300 production could out-last B767 production...

Yes, but there has been quite an evolution since the A300B1 first came out and the current A300-600.

Yep, the line never shut down. In recent years, almost all A300s built have been freighters, most of them for UPS. Production has been running at about 10 per year since the late 1990s. Currently, with this new order, Airbus has a backlog of less than 20 frames, for UPS, Air Hong Kong, Galaxy Airlines (Japan) and FedEx.

YEs, but the A300s are using a lot of fuel... what's the point of still building them (i like it because i really like a300s), why don;t they do A330 Cargos instead ?

cause there simply isn't an A330 cargo yet, and if there was they would have to wait a few years for it to be delivered since airbus has a backlog of quite a few A330's

An A330 uses more fuel than an A300-600. It's a bigger aircraft, with a bigger wing, because it was designed with longer range in mind. FedEx doesn't need the A330's range for the routes they're using the A300s on, so buying A330s would be overkill. Add the higher price tag of an A330 and you'll see it's far cheaper for FedEx to operate A300s than to operate A330s.

As for why the A300-600 is still in production? Well, let's not forget its main competitor, the equally old 767, is also still in production.

Not a chance  , but it is right to say the A300-600F is a better freighter than the B767-200/-300ER F coz it can holds LD6 or LD3 side by side containers. Something the B767 just can't (not big enough).
When the last A300-600F will be delivered, the A330-200F will be ready on time to take the relay.
The nearest freighter LD3/LD6 capable Boeing can offer is the B777-200LR F, but the least I can say is it's not a cheap aircraft and anyway with a payload of 101 metric tons, still far away from the 55 mt the A300-600F can hold.

Good to see this order for the A300-600F. At least the freighter is
still selling, whilst we will surely not see any more pax order in the
future. The last one delivered was for JAS in 2000.

Are you for real? Do you even know the difference between an A300B (the 'really old one') and the A300-600? The A300-600R is the same age and generation as the 767, and that is also still in production, also as a passenger plane.

BTW, JAS is Japan Air System, who were bought by JAL and are now integrated into JAL Domestic. And they received their last three passenger A300-600s in 2002, not 2000.
