Baggage through check

Post by Bowlie »

bmi will change their baggage through check policy on 1 August. See : here In summary they are saying that they will no longer accept (from the passenger or from a connecting carrier) through checked baggage in those cases where the passenger holds two separate tickets. When the passenger holds one ticket it's business as usual.

I'm also aware (but can't find on their site) that British Airways does the same (with separate tickets) when the connection is to/from another airline (other than their one-world partners).

Obviously the no-frills airlines don't do any baggage connections (online or interline) but I'd be interested to learn if there are other airlines that are doing the same as bmi.

One of the (many) reasons I dislike Korean Air is that they refused through check-in via Seoul (both before and after Incheon Airport came 'online'). Note that that included Skyteam flights :(

I can't remember if Asiana did it for Lufthansa flights before Incheon opened. Since Incheon opened, the trouble is that you always have this stupid bus ride between Gimpo and Incheon (the two Seoul airports) when you connect from somewhere else in Korea to outside of Korea (or vice versa). Therefore, you have to get your luggage and carry it yourself to the other airport. I hate it.

I went from Frankfurt to Hong Kong to Sydney, the FRA-HKG leg was with Lufthansa(Star Alliance) then the HKG-SYD leg was by Qantas(OneWorld) & I had no problems with having my baggage checked through all the way. So even with two different groups you can sometimes have baggage through checked

This is the same if tranfering between LGW-LHR and CGH-GRU.

But were you travelling on two seperate tickets????

Many airlines won't through check-in if you travel on two seperate tickets (sometimes the check-in agent even doesn't know that it's possible) thus the "new" policy isn't so strange.

Exactly! I've had good experiences with all kinds of transfers: different tickets, and even different groupings, like bigjulie, and it normally works (given enough transfer time). That's why I was upset about my experiences with Korean Air (and more in general in Korea).

The original post seems to indicate that it's going to be more difficult with BMI as well, however.

With all the companies we handle, we can check the baggage trough to final destination (unless there is an airport change and some exceptions as for example domestic flights with TAROM) if the connection is within 24 hrs and the passenger has a ticket (doesn't have to be the same ticket). But we don't check-in for BMI so I wouldn't know their policy.

Travellers can always check their bagage through as I know... like bigjulie told you this is always possible... I seems strange that bmi or ba will no longer do that..because people will no longer take ba or bmi on a connection...cause they can not check their luggage through

this is indeed strange

BMI and BA won't do it if you travel on two seperate tickets. if you travel on one ticket nothing will change. The impact would be minimal as most pax interline and thus have one ticket

It is a bit silly.

Normally if a PAX is not on board you don't load his luggage and that's all.

That's what we do in all the flights we handle, bmi, Lufthansa, etc.
