Just announced that London will host the 2012 Olympics.

This topic has been renamed in order to tell of the horrid events unfolding here in England.

Marvelous. We can now look forward to having to fund masses of more delayed and overpriced construction in the South East with our taxes. Does anyone buy this 'its great for Britain' line??? Its great if you live south of Watford - for the rest.....we just get to help fund it.

Given the UK's performance on large construction projects in the last 30 years I suspect that the delays experienced in Athens will be nothing compared to what these will be like.

I agree Chunk, we are not in favour, there are more important things that need sorting out here. The only beneficiaries from this will be Blair's already oversized ego, and the hotels who will charge vastly overinflated prices for the duration of the games.

Fantastic news :D

Yes the south east will benefit most but the regions will too. People will combine an olympic visit with a trip or holiday outside of London. Also if the games are successful, whcih I think they will be (just), the image of the UK will be improved and businesses will be attracted to invest in all parts of the UK

Apparently hotels rooms will be available cheaply for the athletes, their families and the media during the games

Fawlty Towers

Post by SN30952 »

Did Chirac loose the 3 votes Paris needed, by his comments on british and british food?
The French were indeed favourite, and Chirac was already thinking cocorico, too early.

Thing is.....Jacques was right! Traditional British food is stodgy crap - comfort food if you like. Thats not always a bad thing - I can recommend a steak pie from Cockburns the butcher in Dingwall for example - stodgy as hell but great in the winter months. I still think the best restaurants in this country are the ones serving foreign food - especially Lebanese, Indian and yes, French!

Back to topic - they are making this big deal about how the football tournament is spread around and how it will benefit Glasgow. My arse it will! In August? We have our own leagues running in August thank you and most football fans will stick to that rather than go watch Trinidad play football.

As they said on Radio 5 last night and I quote - "A great day for London and a great day for England". Doesn;t take a genius to see what this is all about.

Finally - its times like this I really hate this country. I am not a Scottish nationalist at all but when you see the anti-Franch crap that gets printed my the media in London then I become one. A columnist in one of the Sunday papers up here last week provided examples of this and argued that it was basically racism - it is ok it s only the French. What crap. We like the French up here. In fact we like most people! Even the English. As long as they are from North of Luton. Joke - by the way.

At this moment nobody seems able to confirm it was a bomb from what I read. Either way it aint good. Thoughts to all involved but hope not too many victims - its not my fave place in the world but nobody deserves to go through that.

Explosives have been found at the locations (several of them) and at least 20 people are dead.

My thoughts are with the victims

I know what I would do to those who carry out acts like this but it is not suitable to repeat on a public forum  :censored:

I feel very sad now...

Was overjoyed by yesterdays news but all of a sudden this puts things in perspective :(

How can anyone plan this? I mean what kind of pride can someone get in seeing all this bloodshed. Using dirty tricks such as these is just Barbaric.

All my thoughts go to the victims, not only for those who have died but also the ones who suffered horrendous injuries from which they will never recover.

I feel exactly the same as you Vinnie-Winnie. I shall edit the title of this topic as it loooks too frivolous now

On an aviation note, flights into LCY are unaffected, even though it is in the east of the city. Phone networks in London are switched off too. All trains to the capital are stopping short of the city and people are being told not to enter London.

What a horrid day it is here  I was just typing a post in this topic to reply to Chunk and Humberside when VC10 came in to tell me she had heard about a bomb on the Underground and then I saw the piece about the bus being destroyed in Tavistock Square.

Admin - please do not lock or remove this thread, as it should be used for updates and people should be able to express how they feel without censorship.

There have been reports of explosive devices on three London buses, as well as at several tube stations (Liverpool Street, Edgware Road, Aldgate East, King's Cross, Russell Square and Moorgate). Underground trains collided in the panic, intitially it was thought that a power surge had caused one of the explosions on the Underground, butt his was soon ruled out after an inspection of the power systems. An al-Qaeda linked website has claimed responsibility, according to the BBC website.

The express rail links between London and its main airports are suspended.

The confirmed death toll has now risen to 40

What a :censored: day :(

The people on the bus which exploded had been turned away from the Tube stations after the problems broke out on there. It was the height of the rush hour, and anyone who has experienced the London rush hour will know exactly what that is like and how packed the buses and trains get. These would have been people going to work, most likely.

The mobile phone network is now on in London, though not at full capacity as wavelength is being given over for the emergency numbers so as not to restrict communications between the emergency services.

As VC10 said to me, this is happening in places which we are familiar with and so you can relate exactly to what is happening.

I hope the perpetrators are caught and punished, though they won't receive the punishment they deserve.

Dutch news services (www.rtlnieuws.nl) reported that the casualty rate is now at 45 deaths, and over a 1000th wounded.

It seems that there has been 5 attacks on subways, and 1 attack on a bus. The attack on the bus seems to have been executed by a suicide-terrorist. But as September 11th has proved, when the day unfolds it is likely to happen that the number of casualties will rise. Also the information is not very accurate and/or complete at the moment, which also causes a lot of confusion. As well as in the city of London itself, as all the people who watch the events unfold from all over the world.

In these moments of intense pain and sorrow for Britain (and for the rest of the free western world), we will stand united against all those creatures who are trying to undermine western society, and to those who try to suppress our western values by terrorizing us. All my thoughts and feelings are with the British people right now, and especially with the victims and their relatives. I really hope that the creatures responsible for this act of cowardice will be found, and will be punished very hard, and that they never will live in freedom again (the same freedom western society gave them).

I also want to sympathize with the emergency services, that are doing a great job (as far as I can judge that) in this chaotic situation. Great work also on behalf of the British government, for doing all those exercises and information given out (and not for scaring the public, as some people say). Hopefully we will see that the experience learned will result in lower casualties. I do not want to forget intelligence agencies, this time they failed, but a security-expert on TV told that they had prevented 4 to 5 major attacks before.

When I heard the news, I was sitting in the car and listened to the radio. We dropped by my grandparents, where we turned on the TV ASAP. There I could see the damage/harm done by these cowards, performing this act of cowardice. The cold shudders ran down my back, and I felt very sad by what these sick ******** have done to innocent, and moreover UNSUSPECTING and defenseless civilians. I’m disgusted by these cowardly acts…

Again, I deeply sympathize with the British people. All I can say is: "Be British, and behave British in these difficult and confusing times"!

Three of our five terrestiral TV channels are given over to continuing news coverage of the disaster. This morning our newspapers were full of party scenes as the Olympic verdict was announced. Tomorrow it will be a different story.

May the perpetrators burn in eternal hell.

Some of the airport links have started running again, but I read a while ago that terminal 3 at Heathrow had been evacuated, but no more on that just now.

The Docklands Railway is running again but the Tube network is still suspended. Buses in Zone 1 (central London) had been suspended.

That's an easy one, when only considering Europe it will be most probably Holland. Maybe not only because of our US-support, but more because radical people have found an ideal basis and circumstances in this country.

A terror attack on Holland is not what I fear the most, what I fear even more is that things might spin out of control in this country (civilian war or something like that, we have seen what happened after the murder of Theo van Gogh*).

*For all our readers not from Holland or not familiar with the case, Theo van Gogh was a highly controversial columnist who attacked the Islamic religion and terrorism fiercely in his column's. Because of that an Islamic extremist slaughtered him. As a reaction to that, some (radical) Dutch youth attacked Islamic buildings (a primary school and a some mosques).
And I'm afraid that after a major terrorist attack (with a lot of killed people) these Dutch radicals might gain more support in their actions, and things might spin out of control even more then they already do now (Islamic radicals striking back then).

Things aren't looking to well for Holland I guess. :(

I have only contempt for those who use violence in the misguided belief that they can intimidate us.

These scum do not represent anything worthy of being called a religion.

Stay safe but keep on with life.
