Choosing a new Joystick, which one do you recommend?

Post by moons »

Hi people,

My pc has been out for a day and now I see that I can't connect my joystick anymore on the motherboard. A friend told me that I need a new joystick to connect on this new motherboard...Is this right?
We, virtual pilots, know that it's impossible to fly without joystick. It's like driving a car without steer! :) So I got a big problem. It's a hard job to guide your 777 with just a keyboard. :?

So if I need a new joystick, can anyone tell me wich joysticks are good to fly with? Please keep in mind that I'm not swimming in a pool of money, so make it not too pricey.

Thanks already
greets, moons

I have Microsoft's Sidewinder, very responsive and I find it great for controlling virtual aircraft.
Sabena and Sobelair - gone but never forgotten.

I like the sidewinder too. It is great because all Microsoft computers recognize it and you don't need to load any software.

If you are really a serious simmer, I would highly recommend this:
Image This is what I have now and I just love it! It provides a flight sim experience that is so realistic, you would think you were actually in a cockpit.

Myself I'm quite happy with my X8-38U Digital Flight System. http://cgi.befr.ebay.be/ws/eBayISAPI.dl ... eName=WD2V I bought it from EBay 2 weeks ago.

Hi guys,

Thanx for the info. It seems that there are a lot of nice joysticks on the market. :) Especially the last one! But , I too, think it's too expensive.
Such a control-column could be fun I think, but these days you'll find sidesticks too in the cockpit.

NWA 757, can you tell us what's your experience is with your tool? Is it better then a joystick? More realistic as you said. Or maybe more difficult to handle?

there's a version with feedback now, i have it :D
maybe you can consider the new Saitec X-52 ; not to expensive and highly programmable (you don't need you're keyboard anymore)...but no feedback

When I got mine it cost somewhere around $2,000 USD. I also have rudder pedals which cost around $400 USD. It is a lot of money but well worth it!

Personally, I like it more than a joystick. I am sure that they are some pilots out there that like joysticks better (the Airbus pilots ), but I like this better because it is like the Cessna 172s, I fly in real life.

Maybe a silly question (I don't have experience with joysticks); but what do you ("vonsmallhousen" and "maaske") mean with "feedback"?

Feedback is when you can feel the joystick giving 'feedback' wich means (for a race simulator) you can feel the 'bumps' in the road, and the stearing wheel works 'against' you if you tun to hard etc. Same for joysticks I suppose.

"force feedback" simulates the effect of firing a gun, descending weals ore flaps etc. by shaking the stick

Not very realistic though ... anyways, the Thrustmaster Afterburner II isn't expensive and very good! Would be "Beste Koop" by Test Aankoop :P
