US skies, like European skies, are overcrowded. There is NO room for so many legacy carriers in either continents. Europe looks set to reorganise around three or four main legacy plus a bunch of regional carriers and LCC. It is time for the US to face the same reality. Afterall, there are 500 millions europeans compared to 3 US citizens.
I agree with you though ... everyone makes a big deal over the job losses and disruption it will cause but lets be honest it is now a badly run business and needs to be left to fail if thats the way it has to be.
No doubt other airlines will jump in if it does finally come to bankruptcy, With new jobs new aircraft and hopefully a new way of managing so that this problem wont keep repeating itself.
Well in a way it's good that United would make some breathing space for other Us carriers. But it's sad for the people I know who's lives depend on United...
If the judge allows that the company doesn't have to fulfill its pension obligations - which is nothing more or less than breach of contract - the question rises "what is next?"
I suggest the managment of United to place some extra orders for new airplanes. A judge will allow them not to have to pay for the planes.
