Interesting that Emirates feels the original 748 would be a better plane than the proposed stretched 748. IMO, I thought that Emirates would be the ones showing more interest in the stretched version of the 748 than the original proposal and that British Airways would be the one who thought the original better for operations. Strange huh? Anyways, with the decision as to the Length of the 748 and potential families of the 748, Boeing has yet to find a launch customer for the airplane, that to me is a problem for a plane that is due to go into service in 2010.

Agreed!!! I was also shocked by that ;) I think there will probably be some sort of announcement as far as a launch customer goes, for the B747-8I. The skies will not be the same without the pregnant guppy flying in its new shape ;)

Probably Emirates do not want the 748 to overlap with their A380s, which is the only reason why you want both types..

Precisely... Let´s have a look... Emirates already have orders for Boeing 777-200LR (small capacity and long range) as well as A340-500 in service (same). The stretched B748, with smaller capacity but the same range as A380 would compete there. Whereas a Boeing 747-800 "SP" would have range longer than A380-800, yet capacity appreciably greater than that of B777-200LR or A340-500.

I think the way they use the A345 is different from the way they use the 772LR. They don't really use the A345 for ultra long haul routes, instead they use it more like a large A342, and as said some time ago by someone, is the reason why Emirates are still happy with their A345s.

The A380 has 15000km in range, which is just a few hundred km less or more than the 748 (depending on stretch or not), i really wonder whether that few hundred km is all that crucial for Emirates, or whether they simply want something smaller that won't compete with their own A380s.

But the Emirates do not! No one else than PIA does!
