The Airports Council International website contains up-to-date statistics. However only for the top 30 cargo airports (BRU was n°29 in February) and only the latest month is available, no archive.

BRU 2006 total: 691 250 -0.3%

BRU Cargo 2007:
- February 50611 -10.1%

Anyone an idea why we lost so much freight compared to last year?

I don't think your figures are correct. Everyone knows that last year was THE year for cargo at Brussels Airport with 719.560 tons. That's a big difference.

Let us focus on the figures we get from Macquarie Airport and Brussels Airport.

MAY

In May, Brussels Airport received 1.592.000 pax. That's an increase with 2.5% when you compare this with the same month last year.

 Intra-EU: +1,2% and this due to a strong demand out of Germany and Eastern Europe.

 Extra-EU: +6,1%

Cargo:

The total tons of cargo: 60.200 tons. That's an increase with 4,3%

Movements:

There were in May 23.546 movements on our airport.

JUNE

I'm pleased to show you the fantastic figures for June for Brussels Airport. Those are the figures before the summer holiday.

In June, Brussels Airport received 1.641.000 pax. This is an increase with 5,9% when you compare this with the same month last year. To give you an idea: 92.000 pax more.
This is the second time this year that Brussels Airport can show figures with an increase of 6%.

 Intra-EU: an increase with 5,2%
 Extra-EU: an increase with 7,7%

In June some new airlines started with new services to BRU. US Airways started from the beginning, Northwest started in the middle of the month. Albanian and Easyjet started at the end of the month, so those two had no influence on those figures. We will see that next month.

When we look at the first six months of this year, then we see that Brussels Airport received 8.163.000 pax. That's an increase with 3,4%

Well done Brussels Airport :!: :!:

Thank you for that, Atlantis.

Do you have figures for transit passengers? In Sabena's time, there were a lot of transit passengers in BRU. How is that now?

Sorry sn26567, I have no transit figures.

Macquarie Airport gives only total, intra and extra EU figures.

JUNE

In June there was also an increase in movements: + 1,9% when we compare this with the same month last year.

When we have a look at the first six months of this year, then there is an increase in movements of 1,6% when we compare this with the first six months of last year.

I try to get the figures for cargo. But that's very difficult at this moment.

What's the point in comparing the movement growth of BRU with the passenger growth of AMS?

My dear JOVAN,

When you compare, then do it right. You compare Schiphol pax % with Brussels movements %. Big difference, don't you think!!!

And if you want to compare, then I will give you some numbers:

Pax Schiphol: +3,9%
Pax Brussels: + 3,8%
Pax Frankfurt: + 2,5%

We all knew that you don't like Brussels Airport but don't give false figures to the other members.

BTW: this topic is not a topic to compare Brussels Airport with the mega airports around us. Why not? Because those airports are a totally other segment. Those airports are +40 million pax. Brussels Airport is max, according to the capacity, 30 million.

Thank you Atlantis. Good figures indeed.

Still, it is good to compare with the big players, to know where you stand!!

Do you have figures from Zurich, Helsinki, Vienna,..?

I agree, you need to benchmark yourself not only to the direct competition, but also to the marketleaders.

As, for Zurich, Vienna... Isn't Copenhague in the same league (annualy around 20 MIO passengers)? From the Macquarie report:

Passengers June: + 1.9% (2.047 MIO passengers)
Passengers YTD (so 01/01/07 -> 30/06/07): + 2.3% (10.232 MIO passengers)

I'll see if I can find some figures about other airports, but as tomorrow I'll leave to Prague for the weekend (not by plane unfortunately), it will be for next week.

BTW Atlantis,

Just noticed in the report of Macquarie:

They claim YTD passenger traffic of +3.5% (8.163 MIO passengers) for Brussels airport, not 3.8%.

From where does the discrepancy with your figures come?

Pieter

Dear Atlantis,

I like BRU, not its management or what I see from it.
BRU has an enormous potential and a great infrastructure.

Do not only look in the mirror to admire yourself, but do some benchmarking like all private companies have to do , in this competitive world.

Compare with the Premier Ligue (AMS,CGD,MAD,..) and with the Jupiler Ligue (BRU, ZRH, VIE, CPH, HEL...

And see where you can improve.

The small difference is due to the little difference in Macquarie Airport and Brussels Airport figures last year. That's why you have a difference of 0.3%. This is quite normal.

@JOVAN

This topic is only to give the figures for Brussels Airport and this for the members who want to use it. This is not a topic to compare airports.

BTW you also can't compare local courier companies with TNT, DHL or UPS. That's useless.

Brussels Airport confirmed in meanwhile that Saudi Arabian Cargo will add on other 3 turnarounds as from 8 september. This means that Saudi will have 23 flights to and from Brussels Airport.

MNG cargo operates new ad hoc cargo flights between Istanbul and Brussels.
I doubt that we will see them in the cargo timetable, due to this ad hoc flights.

PS: On the Brussels Airport site, you can find now a new topic in Brucargo part. It calls Brucargo West.

JULY

Brussels Airport received in July 1.899.000 pax. That's an increase with 6.3% when we compare this with the same month last year.

Intra-EU: +6,5%
Extra-EU: +5,9%

July was also the month with a first full operation of Easyjet, Geneva, and Albanian Airlines, Tirana.
BMI Regional gave up its daily route ex-Aberdeen on 30.07.
Turkey was a strong business in July.
Due to the bad summer, the summer rush to last minutes was even bigger then years before.

July received also a boost due to the two new American players: US Airways and Northwest.

Also news about Cargo:

In july, Brussels Airport, handled 62.700 tons of Cargo. That's an increase with 13,3% when we compare this with the same month last year. This due to the first full month of operation of Jordanian Cargo and a higher volume for Ethiopian.

Because there were no figures last month for cargo are these the ones for June: 63.600 tons which is an increase with 10,3% when we compare this with the same month last year.

Movements:

In July, there were 23.649 movements on Brussels Airport or an increase with 3,6% when we compare this with the same month last year.

Congrats Brussels Airport

Indeed good figures ...

I suppose that with the new flights to Mumbai and Newark, the start in September of flights to Delhi and Toronto, additional LCC flights, etc., the remaining months of the year will all show growth of > 5%, or even more ?

And next year we will see > 2,0 million for July (?) ... :D
