Waterford-London was the first route of Ryanair :

1985 : Ryanair is set up by the Ryan family with a share capital of just £1, and a staff of 25. We launch our first route in July with daily flights on a 15-seater Bandeirante aircraft, operating from Waterford in the southeast of Ireland to London Gatwick.
See more at: http://corporate.ryanair.com/about-us/h ... TlT6I.dpuf

A good omen for VLM ? One sure wish them as much success as Ryanair - altough the success did not come easily for Ryanair ... and they didn't stay long at Waterford.
IF IT AIN'T BOEING, I'M NOT GOING.

De stad wel, de huizen daar aan tegen niet! ;)
Maar laat ons nu maar stoppen met dit forum vol te zetten met persoonlijke ideeën en opvattingen. Het gaat hier tenslotte over VLM. :)

The city was, not the houses though! ;)
But let us stop arguing about the airport, this is still a topic about VLM. :)

Lubumba has a point though.
Antwerp is full of Nimby's and the departures on prevailing winds is over the city for runway 29.
While this is acceptable for Citation jets or the relatively quiet F50's, the noise of SSJ100's coming in and out the whole day would spark protests, and rightfully so.

I think that there's an opportunity for a 3000 meter "runway 32" extending to the South-East of the airport. It's mostly fields down there, and perhaps it's already some backup plan (should Belgium split and Antwerp become the new capital of Vlaanderen) the Flemish have from before that prevented the Mortsel area from growing towards the airport. If you look at it, it's weird that there are huge open fields surrounded by urbanised area's and it's weirdly the perfect shape to become a runway.

With such a runway, the noise issues would be minimal as the aircraft would be high up by the time they reach the end of the runway.

The biggest hurdle for antwerp airport is the fortress prohibiting the elongation of the runway as is.

Willing to maintain historical sites is one thing, but sometimes it just get's crazy.

Hi,

Let's have a last something here about the previous discussion (don't worry, it IS about the SSJ-100) ;)

Hmm ... just a question ... did you ever see a SSJ-100 flying so far? ;) I did a few times on airshows and let me tell you ... it's quiet ... a lot quieter then the F50 (which simply is quite noisy for nowadays norms honestly), same goes for Avro RJ and Embraer E-jet family, all of them making a lot less noise so .. it can only be better, bigger planes does not neccessary means more noise so in that case I do not believe people in the vicinity have a valid reason to complain as they will have very little noise problems in comparision to F50. Can't cound the various times I could here the F50 reversing on the runway from Berchem Station awaiting my train but never heard a Global Express or Avro Jet reversing on the runway from that distance so ... ;)

Let's hope they will get the 'way of the future' (read : SSJ-100) very soon :)

If (if!) Flanders becomes independent, Zaventem will still be on Flemish territory and will still be the national airport...

Now that I think of it, Zaventem is so close to Antwerp that the airport should be called Brussels-Antwerp Airport. After all, Antwerp is a pretty important city too (world diamond capital, fashion, world port).

A few years ago there were plans to rename the airport like that, but it didn't survive the first voting round... What a pity :(

I've seen the SSJ100 plenty of times on airshows and it was indeed very quiet.
In the same way I have seen the A380 which was very quiet during airshows, but quite noisy in actual operations. I think that at airshows they play a lot with the throttles to make it appear quieter than it really is (full throttle flying towards the spectators, idle when flying away). In addition, the loads are very light (little fuel, no payload), so there is no need for a lot of throttles in the first place.
I think that the SSJ100 will be quite nosiy when taking off with a full load of pax from such a short runway, but also coming in with full reverse.

The F50 makes a deep low pitch hum and a similarily deep rattling reverse. This is much less annoying than the high pitch whine of the departing jets' fans and sub-woofer reverse. While the Avro is relatively quiet in flight especially thanks to GTF and smaller fans/BPR, it's unbearably noisy on the ground.
I'm pretty sure that you could hear it taxiing from the Cathedral  In fact, it's such an annoying noise that it drives you nuts to a point that I sometimes seem to hear it even though I'm nowhere near one...

Not sure this was already mentioned here ,but it appears that the VLM-site is now also available in Dutch and French, not only in English. Good move from VLM. Maybe they should consider to add also German ,and possibly Italian in view of their planned destinations. :)

On top of that they are also adding Sunday flight to Geneve as from 29 march 2015. Also positive to attract extra passengers . 8-)

Smart move, probably related to the fact that they are expanding to Liege.

It is obvious that antwerp will be no more a fixed base for vlm. I've seen on the website they are also offering flights from birmingham to wateford, but no connection to antwerp. I am really curious about the future of vlm, lets hope a bright one.

The concept of "a national flag carrier" has gone extinct over the last few decades, but for a handful of white elephants; next to go is the idea of a carrier's fixed home base.

As individual workers and as entrepreneurs, all of us must be ready to shift places and roles according to market evolution.

Today's Geneva flights are operated by OO-VLR instead of the usual OO-VLF frame. So it seems it's out of hibernation :)

Can somebody explain why Antwerp - Southampton? Don't see the potential in this route. Thx! ;-)
