It's indeed sad to see how the computer has kicked away the engineer's place in the cockpit. :(
But computers have also enabled the civil aviatoin to continue its evolution to a more reliable, safe and comfortable way of transportation.

They won't reduce the cockpitcrew to 1 ... just imagin that one getting a heart-attack ... Cockpits in civil aviation will stay a 2-person-occupancy for a looooooooong time !

The 2 pilots is a redundancy safety feature in aircraft, just like redundant hydraulics etc, so as long as there is a pilot, there will be two of them.

This as opposed to a flight engineer, who was mainly there to make life easier for the pilots, and whose tasks are now handled by computers.

Also, I have no doubt a computer can be programmed to perfectly replace the pilots, but being a computer scientist myself I would rather trust my life to a pilot (make that two, please) than to the person who programmed the computer.... :-) (Of course this might just be because I don't know any pilots, but I know what computer programmers are like..)

Qantas next likely customer

It appears Qantas may be in line for 787's and 747ADV, and possibly 777's as well.

Lets hope that the good old Queen of the skies, gets the thumbs up from Boeing. It would be very sad to see her disapear into history, like so many other fine aircraft.

Bits44, Qantas have already 12 A380 on firm order. I don't see them ordering B747Adv by now... more likely B787 and B777.

Regards

Seb.

Not too long though. Where is the $$$ going to come from though for the development of the 747Adv??? Uncle Sam doesn't buy into new aircraft (unless it's military) aircraft. Boeing had better hope the 787 will turn a profit otherwise, they may have to wait a while for some capital.
