Boeing Statement on Emirates Airline Flight EK521

Boeing is aware of the Emirates Airline Flight EK521 accident in Dubai. We are thankful all aboard were evacuated safely. A Boeing technical team is standing by to launch in support of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board.

In accordance with the international protocol governing aviation accident investigations, all inquiries about the investigation must be directed to the United Arab Emirates General Civil Aviation Authority.

FlightRadar24 takes a reasonable position when it states "As with all incidents, we will wait for the official investigation to conclude the cause of the accident, we ask you do the same."

I will personally follow that advice, not without noticing this sentence in the Aviation Herald report: "tower reminded the crew of lowering the gear" !

A firefighter attending to the aircraft lost his life. R.I.P.

United Arab Emirates General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) reported a firefighter attending to the fire, while saving lives, lost his own life. The director of the GCAA said: "I salute his ultimate sacrifice that kept many from harm’s way. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family."

But now Emirates can no longer call it an incident.

whats the point of this useless dicussion? It almost sounds like a triumph that they cant call it an incident OFFICIALLY. In a press release emirates can call it anything they like, just like all airlines put a spin on everything. It was an accident from the start even without the poor fire fighter losing his life.

ICAO definition:

Accident. An occurrence associated with the operation of an aircraft which takes place between the time any person boards the aircraft with the intention of flight until such time as all such persons have disembarked, in which:

a) a person is fatally or seriously injured as a result of [redacted], or

b) the aircraft sustains damage or structural failure which:
- adversely affects the structural strength, performance or flight characteristics of the aircraft, and
- would normally require major repair or replacement of the affected component...

Indeed... is it really supposed to burn down completely just like that ?
My messages reflect my personal opinion which may be different than yours. I beleive a forum is made to create a debate so I encourage people to express themselves, the way they want, with the ideas they want. I expect the same understanding in return.

Completely normal regardless the manufacturer of the plane.

While virtually all of the interior of the plane has some sort of flame retardant layer applied it's just a retardant, it prevents materials from burning when you put an open flame to it but if you keep the flame to any material long enough it will combust eventually. Most of the flame retardants can sustain a certain type of flame (and temperature) for a certain amount of time, mostly only for minutes at the max, some protecting against the highest temperatures are only effective for less then one minute. Fact is that most of the materials will burn eventually when heated. It's called pyrolysis if I remember correctly (don't shoot me if I explain it a bit wrong, I had to dig far back in my memory, it's been a while since I was involved in the fire fighter world). To explain it simple: due to the heat the material will undergo a form of thermochemical decomposition and it will release gasses, this can create another event called a flashover (which occurs in closed spaces). The flashover will occur when the temperature reaches the auto-combustible temperature of the materials and will ignite everything.

With a plane you have the right recipe to create a perfect fire. A normal fire will spread rather slowly but when you get a decent fire to start with (like in this incident) it will go at a much faster rate, especially when there are highly combustible fuel sources involved (like here the fuel itself), the fuel burns hot and due to the open doors it can easily spread inside. Since at that point the hull is still intact there's no room for the heat to escape and thus every single material inside will be heated quite quickly (minutes) which will eventually result into a flashover engulfing every single material inside after which the hull will be breached due to the heat (and melting point of the metals). At this point the fire can be extinguished quite quickly by smothering it with what we called "A triple F" (AFFF), but these days it's more common to use bio-degradable protein foams. some types of AFFF can't even be produced anymore since about 7 years or so if my memory serves me right. ;)

Its quite a normal reaction from people in a state of shock. The brain distances itself from the situation by going in a "this is not happening" state. Also, a lot of people dont know that they arent allowed to take their bags. Good work by the Cabin crew though. Nice clear and concise evac commands.
