Quantas flight 32 proves that an evacuation is a carefully considered decision. That flight suffered an uncontained engine failure

> catastrophic engine failure and inability to shut down the engine;
rupturing at least some of the electricals;
> uncertainty about the Landing Distance Available leading to maximum braking being applied and ultimately resulting in hot brakes.
That crew decided that despite the fire hazard and the high probability for a catastrophic outcome, it was less desirable to evacuate than to keep everybody on board in orderly fashion. Just to say that Qantas 32 is a case in point that proves that an evacuation is not a no-brainer.

BigJets wrote:When you're at the commands and your aircraft slides off the runway and the gear collapses, then chances are one or both engines are damaged as well. Is there a fire or not? You can not assess the situation from the cockpit, nor from the cabin for that matter and you certainly do not risk the safety of the passengers by keeping them on board and “assume” that everything is going to be ok. Well, everything did turn out ok but that was more luck rather than a correct judgment. Yes, passengers do get injured when an emergency evacuation is ordered but those injuries could be considered light compared to what would happen if the aircraft would of turned into a ball of fire.fcw wrote:What makes you think the crew should have ordered an evacuation?
When do you think an evacution is ordered?
Light injuries? If people would have jumped down a slide which is not touching the ground they could have been killed!
It sounds like you have an axe to grind BigJets.

Just for info: slide design accounts for the higher ground clearance of the rear exits in case of nose gear collapse. But the angle of the slide will be steeper indeed.fcw wrote:
