It's strange, but every time the Sabena saga is picked up, the memory of some gives up, and only "Swiss Swiss Swiss" is remembered as cause. Please read your SN files again. And/or the Report of the Parliament Hearings. And/or one of the books that have been written about this. Sabena didn't went bankrupt only because of the Swiss holdup. Sabena dissappeared because of a combination of facts.ElcoB wrote:Come on, very easy to repeat the mantra of the 'evil unions'. You already forgot the Sabena story? Who plundered what? Indeed, private (Swiss) investors did it so enthusiastic ....well, they ended up convicted for violating the law.LX-LGX wrote:Italy and Belgium are the 2 only European countries where unions can do whatever they like, without being hold legally responsible.
- cumulation of ongoing losses, for 75 years. Example: during the last 25 years, the Belgian taxpayer has covered losses for 31,5 mia BEF: some 780,000,000 euro. "Transferred losses": nobody likes to see that in the books of a company one wants to take over.
- refusal by the Franco-Belgian establishment for a non-French speaking SN/KLM partnership (back in the 80's).
- ongoing strikes for years made loose Sabena it's credibility from the public.
- 11th Sept 2001 set back in aviation.
- stupid A320/A321 deal (Sept 1997, those 34 planes).
- Swiss holdup.
- ongoing strikes during take over discussions. Unions never thaught that the government would allow SN to go bankrupt.
- stupid decisions by Belgian politicians: Elio di Rupo (who couldn't find another investor then Swissair) and Daems, Verhofstadt & Vande Lanotte (who have signed the big Hotel Agreement without bank guarantuee).
