More interesting detail on this.
Per the previous remark, do Emirates and BA normally lease of buy their aircraft?
ILFC has to purchase an aircraft that can be re-leased if its turned in for any reason. (such as Emirates getting their A380 which they leased 777s to fill the void).
Emirates has both a financial setup and route structure that’s different. No one else has even come close to the A380 orders they have.
Qatar seems to be able to go the way they want as well. To be a success the A350 has to have wide market appeal, not a few large orders (or previous obligation ala US Airlines)
Right now Airbus is in a position make extravagant claims, they don't have to validate them (can't) yet. For Leahy to contend the 787 design is "Old Fashioned" is a sad joke. At some point you have to prove your claims, and if I was considering an order and heard something bogus like that, I would run as fast as I could to order Boeing.
What I will say is that of the two contradictions, that being Airbus can’t afford to get this wrong, and they can’t afford a delay- when they have to choose, they will have to take a delay. To get it wrong means they are a small player for the indefinite future, and there will be others nipping on their heals before they can recover.
If Boeing takes the narrow body market away from them, they are sunk.
The business of being second is better only applies if you have superior technology to offer, if you don’t, then you are road kill.
