I can see a good case for placing RFID tags on all cables, chains, links, hooks, etc, and a reader on the crane, so it can figure out by itself what kind of load it can safely lift.

According to "Airliner World" for march 2006 (on sale now), the wing, worth 15 million pounds has now be repaired, at an extra cost of 5 million pounds sterling. Although the accident happened during the Christmas holidays (at Chester, in the UK), employees were apparently asked to return to work, so that the wing could be repaired and delivered with the minimum of delay.
