Today, 20 June, at about 1630 an agent of mine came to me and said that he could see smoke in the cargo bin on E26A. I came over to the A/C, Mesa N854MJ YBE, to check out the problem. Sure enough there was a faint cloud of smoke filling the bin. I notified the Captain and the Fire Dept. After an assessment of the A/C the captain concluded that there was a fire in the Lav holding. Maintainance pulled the A/C apart and found that a cigarette was the cause of the fire. Someone smoked in the lav and flushed their butt down and caused the fire. I wounded why the smoke detector never went off.
How a cigarette butt could remain lit after being flushed into the lav holding - unless it was wrapped in a paper towel or TP and floated around - is an interesting prospect!

People caught smoking should be strapped to the engine nacelles
Either that or be sent as deck cargo on a submarine
If he was sent as deck cargo on a submarine, he wouldn't be able to smoke would he; the cigarette would be a bit soggy.
I was on a VS flight where a similar thing happened, I was sat by the toilet and someone was smoking in there, but it wasn't until I informed a crew member that they did anything - do the fire alarms actually work?
Actually, nicotine junkies tend to disable the smoke detectors in the toilets. They should install smoke detector tampering alarms or something. And then smoke detector tampering alarm tampering alarms. Etc.
I was told once by lowflyby that on a B757 you can take the stopper out of the sink and the sink will have a vaccum stronger than the air vent moving the smoke away from the alarm. I have no idea how you would do this on the Embraer.
That is so true....when I was a flight attendant on long-haul flights, I did smoke on the 757 (along with other crew members). You just have to be careful!!
