Accra, Ghana airport

Post by gap777 »

I am new to this forum and like everyone here i share a love of anything aviation. i will be travelling to Accra,Ghana for a 3 week holiday using KLM from Toronto-Accra. I was born in Accra but moved to Canada when i was 18 months, and i went back home in 86 but haven't been since. I was wondering what the service will be like aboard KLM and if they have revamped the facilities at Kotoka airport. As I remeber it was pretty filthy and dilapidated in 86. You guys post some good stories and i enjoy reading them. Hope to hear from someone soon.

thanks,

I can only help you with the YYZ-AMS part. It will either be of a 777, or a 747. Cross fingers for the 777. You will have PTV's. The hardly use the MD-11 on the YYZ route anymore. Otherwise, I think KLM is a really good airline. I have had goo experiences with them. Have a nice flight!

Welcome to luchtzak gap777. Just like heathrow, I can only help you with YYZ-AMS part. Since it is summer time, it will be a 744 (no PTV). Transatlantic service is very good, on a par with BA (and better than AC, AF, or LH). AMS is one of the friendliest BIG airports in Europe for transit pax. Enjoy your trip

Welcome to Luchtzak Gap 777.

Well, you will definitely enjoy your trip aboard KLM. Without doubt, one of the finest airlines around!

For the sector AMS-ACC, you will be on the MD-11. KLM recently upgraded this route from a 763, probably to take advantage of the collapse of Ghana Airways. (BA upgraded to 747 from 763, LH upgraded to A333 and even EK started daily flights. I guess BMI ulso upped their frequencies).

Kotoka International Airport will pleasantly surprise you if you last visited in 86. It features an all new departure and arrival terminal, separate from the dilapidated building that was there in 86. You will most probably go :wow: It is a lot more organized and quite clean. You should also notice a lot more airline activity, usually the apron is full on most evenings with increased traffic.

I shuttle frequently between NBO & ACC and I am currently in Accra and I hope to get some pictures for you tommorrow (take it as a welcome gift :D ) so check and hope i'll be successful. Let's hope the weather holds, its been quite wet lately.

Cheers,

Walter.

Do not worry about KLM, gap777..
And consider you a happy man, you will stay longer in KLM's premisses than in Accra's Kotoka airport.
Considering that your trip will be concluded on KLM, your last souvenirs of your trip will be ...excellent. (And no tipping allowed there!) 8)
Read what you can expect ARRIVING in Ghana....

And as the man concludes: Bottom line, be prepared for a sub-standard airport and to give some "gifts" to your "friends" whenever you're arriving or leaving this country.

(Although you would rather use your foot to "hand' over the gifts, remain calm at all times. The more people hand them gifts, the longer they will wait for the luggage.
It is a shame, for the airport, a shame for Ghana.... Corruption starts with the first Ghanaian Cedi ..... )

Sorry I am a couple of days late. I have a shot of the new airport as well as of some aircraft. How can I add them to the forum?

Just upload your pictures to the coppermine gallery, in the topic below you can find instructions how to do that:
https://www.aviation24.be/postt4516.html

And then just place the url of your picture here like this: Image (make sure you het the url with .jpg on the end, you can find it by right-clicking on the picture with your mouse and select "prosperties").

Hope this helps and succes uploading your pictures.

Thanks a million B744skipper.

Welcome again GAP777. This is the new Kotoka, quite a far cry from what it was back in 86 when you were last there. The arrival terminal is below the departure terminal (on the right side of the empt parking lot [reserved for airline crew shuttles and support]).

The old terminal that was used is to the left of the departure terminal and is now used for domestic flights, mainly to Kumasi and Tamale, and served by Antrak Air. It also houses a lost baggage storage facility.

Hope this helps. Let us know your experience when u arrive.

Thanks again for everybody that responded. Hopefully with Ghana being one of the African countries whose debt with the IMF will be wiped out, they will be able to spend some of the money on further upgrading the airport and the services. Of course after they have taken care of more important items like education and social services. I noticed that the ACC-AMS route will get the A330-200 in the fall. Too bad I was hoping to fly on it this summer. I thought I read somewhere that KLM would be using the 777 on the YYZ-AMS. They are still using the 747 though. Any idea if or when the switch will be made?

Cheers and thanks Walter for the pics
