Has to be true. I read it here:

It is a nice looking A/C. I'm a fan of A/C with a center engine. I don't think I'd be too fond of a cramped quarters. However the pereformance does look good.

Nope the Tu-154 isn't the fastest in service.

The DC.10 is a little faster then the Tupolev:

DC-10-30 - Max speed 982km/h (530kt), max cruising speed 908km/h (490kt). Range with max fuel and no payload 12,055km (6505nm), range with max payload 7415km (4000nm).
DC-10-40 - Speeds same. Range with max fuel and no payload 11,685km (6305nm), range with max payload (& JT9D-59As) 7505km (4050nm).

Not that the speed mentioned in the article about the Tu154 is the max speed and not it's cruising speed which will be lower.

Yvo

besides I wondered about one thing ... isn't it the case that due to the characteristics of air flow a ten percent increase from 800km/h to 880km/h results in more than ten percent more fuel consumption? I have read that velocities much higher above 800km/h result in seriously inefficient aerodynamics in terms of drag and so. So that would be why the cruise speed is about 850km/h for today's jets. Is that true?

Wikipedia should be right on this.

Q: Is there some central place where
objectively gathered data based
on tests is available?

A: Probably not. What purpose would
such an exercise/agency serve?

No such thing as airplane races.

I think for military aircrafts the "Federation of American Scientists" is worth a try. The US section:

http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/index.html

and for foreign aircraft:

http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/row/index.html

up to my impression they are quite objective

In 2003 my family and me were riding to Bulgaria with Air Via on a TU-154.
My wife nearly died on the trip forth and back to Bulgaria, because of
the loudness and uncomfortableness. And on the final approach to the
airport they had the cockpit door open any my wife could see the landing...
she will never get on a TU-154 again !
