Jumpseat Policies

Does anyone know what the deal is with Jumpseat's having never asked before if I could ride up on the flight deck I have no idea. I'm planning to fly to egypt. Who do you ask, when you do what, and when? Thanks

For JUMPSEAT u need to ask the COMMANDER of the AIRPLANE. And if u read the Luchtzak pub we have shared the nitty grittes.

I wouldn't recommend asking to see the flightdeck. Many airlines now operate a policy of no passengers on the flightdeck.

I think there's nothing wrong with asking polite.
When we went on honeymoon my wife and I sat for 45 minutes in the jumpseat ( and I didn't even ask, we were invited ) and the captain explained everything about the instruments.
But that was a long haul flight and I think you've got a bigger chance there than on a short flight.

Doens't matter that much I think. I had 6 flights last year in April, 6 times asked to get a quick look on the flightdeck and 6 times 'no, not allowed... not anymore' (It were both short- and long-haul flights).

Well, I once asked in-flight if I could see the cockpit, but that was denied. Also did they deny it after landing, on both legs, this was with Air Baltic.
On all my other flights, I asked after landing if I could have a look into the cockpit and it was/is never a problem.

@MD-11. I guess you are wright about the Long-haul thing (asking if you can visit the cockpit in-flight), because then the pilots tend to have more time to talk/explain/(entertain

) one, then when flying short-haul routes. The pilots would be more likely to be busy with preparing landing or whatever.

I know that in America, since September 11, 2001, only a flight crew member of that airline can ride jumpseat. A US Airways Express (Piedmont) pilot can't ride on a US Airways Express (PSA) flight as a jumpseat. Stupid Politics.

@ryanvsnow, I think I have overheard somewhere the fact that no passengers where allowed on the flight-deck, with US based airlines.
Can you confirm this?

Either way, I think the main factor is the captain, because some will allow you to come up front and others won't.

Thanks all of you for your prompt replys. I would probably be flying with Qantas if they operate such a flight. It would be a long haul flight, naturally, to egypt. Does anyone know anything about qantas in particular?

Skipper, I don't have a link to it on the net but i did conferm this with a US Airways Chief Pilot. He clains that this is true with all US based carriers.

Btw what is QUANTAS?
Is it does not exist, it can't crash.

The airline I've flow with was Qantas*....

Yes, Melbourne - Tullamarine (MEL / YMML) Australia - Victoria) to Egypt would be a long flight. The closest you can get is Rome with QF.

Longtime, when I was in ATH for Sabena, QF had a stop there, (their crew stayed in Titanya, near Omonia, remember I had my apart there too), and SN was flying BRU-ATH-CAI.
That would have been a good connection, alas... long time ago.

Always ask you never know.

As to how you should ask I would simply write a small letter. In the letter you just state your name and quickly tell what you are doing in your life and also explain that you are a big aviation enthusiast. The letter shouldn't be very long but should motivate a little bit the reason why you would go on the jumpseat. And don't write things like: " I would like to go on the jumpseat to take lots of pics and put them on a.net blablabla" that's not a good way to motivate.

And don't forget to write down your seat number on the letter, it can be useful.

Then hand out the letter to the FA which is greeting the pax when you board the plane and tell him/her in a very friendly way that it's intended for to the captain.
Well, if the FA is friendly enough it will hand it out to the captain. But some of them open it and read and never give it to the captain.... Anyway, if the captain receives your letter and if he/she is in a good mood that day you might get your jumpseat ride.

But this will not be possible anymore on any US airline since 9/11. But since you are flying Qantas you could have a chance.
