GE90-115B

Post by SkyJet »

André,

You are absolutely right ! The 777 is the most beatiful plane in the sky! Like the 747 is the "Queen of the sky", the 777 is the "King of the sky" !

Here's some more about the most powerfull engine in the world, the General Electric GE90-115B.

The engine was being test-flown on GE's flying testbed, N747GE, a 747-121, normally powered by (and this is not a joke) 4 Pratt & Whitney JT9D-7A turbofans.
For the testflights, GE90-115B was fitted on the engine No 2 position.
Considering its huge size (inlet 3.25m in diameter), ground clearance was only 0.30m !
http://www.airliners.net/open.file/302950/L/

To keep the aircraft balanced, the 747's starboard wing tanks are permanently ballasted with 10,440 kg more fuel than those in the port wing!
The engine's 115,000 pounds take-off thrust is almost equal to the the combined thrust of the other 3 Pratt & Whitney's!
Needless to say, in this configuration, the pilotting skills are tested to the
limit!

Once airborne, engine No 1 and 3 are put back idle, while No 4 is left in the 50% thrust position. Although only the No 2 is generating thrust, it pushes the 747 climbing at around 250 kts !
This engine generated a record-breaking thrust (in the test-rig) of 123,000 lbs !!!
On an early test flight, a succesful air start was performed at 39,000ft. A similar test was planned at 41,000ft, but the engine couldn't be flamed out!
During the water ingestion tests, around 4,200 litres of water per minute was pumped in the engine without flaming out...

I feel a lot safer with these 2 enormous engines underneath the wings of a 777 than 4 sewing-machine-engines powering the A340!!!!

Hey Skyjet,
Very impressive report and pictures. It's not the 747 or 777 that are King or Queen of the skies, but this GE90-115B engine!

  • Hi,

Why are there not more people talking about the Boeing 777 ?
OK it is an expensive plane, but it is one of the best airliners on the market (if not THE BEST).
In service since 1995(only), already more 450 have been delivered on a total order of more than 600.
KLM gets its 777's in October.
    See you soon.

Great a/c indeed. Unfortunately I've only few experience when it comes to dispatch or load/unload the plane. All I remeber is that not all handling equipment (such as scissor-elevator, catering truck, fueling truck, stairs) is suitable due to the height. I also recall that UA preferred to refer to this a/c as a "small, two-engined 747" rather than a "big 767".

Thanks for the research Skyjet, and thanks for the KLM pictures to Demol and Ground_crew.

I totally share Skyjet's opinion, especially the quote about the A340.

I do not agree !!!

Okay, the 777 might be an impressive aircraft but to call it the King of the Sky????

Such titles are in my opinion only for planes as the Concorde, the B707 or the B747, being planes which really changed the way of travelling the sky.

I think you can hardly say that the 777 changed the way of flying.

And what's wrong with the A340?

  • Which French taste ,Airbus is a consortium of more countries and thus a European plane and not French.

As for The Concorde the French would not have been able to build it on their own.
By the way, the original Concord(e) plans were British.

Am I the only one who doesn't like the aircraft? I think it's just to fat for flying. Comparing an A330 (or 340) and a 777, is like a swallow and a pigeon!

Have you ever seen a B777 for real :?: Cause if it's not the case, you'll probably find the engines very impressive, when you see it for the first time
