Largest / most modern African airline

Post by Bruspotter »

Hello

South African airways has done another step closer to an all airbus fleet a wile ago...recently they have already received 7 Airbus A319's in the marvelous SAA livery .

Egypt Air is going the same way (except the B777 and 735) they have an all airbus fleet from A300's , A340 , A330 and A319/320/321's.....

But there's another question I ask myself...What IS the most modern and Largest airline of Africa?

I let you guys decide with me.....In the mean time I'm going to check the fleet ciphers....

My Guess goes to South African airways , or maybe Egypt Air...:D

Best regards: Yannick ;)

Service on Air Mauritius is great, with PTV on each seat, but I'm not considering them as an African Airline.
My vote goes for SA with 2nd place given to KQ. Some north african carriers are well placed as well...

Seb.

In your poll question, you are actually asking two different questions. 1) the most modern and 2) the most largest.

Which means that it is impossible to answer your poll.

By the way: the largest airline can easily be looked up in a book, so isn't really a question for a poll (where you want to check the opinions of people).

Didn't SAA cancel the a320 order and decided to stick with their (brand new) 738's? (because of a financial crisis?)

While SAA is certainly the largest airline in Africa, Egyptair will have in three years time one of the most modern fleets in Africa. Stream-lining the fleet with just three types of Aircraft has been announced and should be implemented soon.
But SAA will remain the largest fleet for a long time...

You are forgetting Air Senegal International (V7) which operates B737-700. They are based in DKR.

I voted for SAA, because it's the first African airline operating the
newest generation of the A340.

By the way, I'm curious who's the one that voted for MK Airlines
as Africa's most modern airline :?

Hello

Sabena_960:

Well I must confess it's a little strange , but I guess the most modern will be the largest I think in this case...extra comes that actually I mean wich airline is most the mix of both....were I mean with wich airline is the largest and although modern for the number of aircrafts wich are really modern in % of the whole fleet cipher...

But actually the main Poll question is 'wich is the LARGEST' so , now no confusion anymore..it's about the largest....just mentioning that it's just between the most modern airlines so probably in the the main Egypt Air and SAA....but also KQ , although I don't think they have a large fleet cipher.

And SAA DID had some 320's but clearly they changed their mind and bought B737-800H's instead of the airbusses.

In the mean time they seem to have money to bough some airbusses again...but this time the smaller variant , the 319.

I'm sure this time they'll stay in the fleet...ellsworth they wouldn't buy 7 already and order even more...(up to 10? or more???).

PS : there should arrive surely one more 'Large' Airbus 340 or 330 , because on one of the recent pictures of the 380's test flight...you can see a SAA tail in the background.

Voted!

Your intentions are not that bad Yannick, just pay attention what you ask precisely!

This is a poll, which means everybody is free to vote and give her/his opinion.
If a person finds a DC8 with GPS, TCAS, electronic chart computers (like in the 777's of KLM), WX radar and etc. is modern...well I can understand his/her opinion. Who are we to come between someone's opinion? Yes indeed...nobody!

Looking forward to similar polls!

Regards,
Tommy

I've voted for South African Airways. But in my opinion Kenya Airways is rather modern as well. If you look to Kenya, it's not the wealthiest place in Africa, but you can't see that on Kenya Airways. Very up to date. ;)

Thank you.

Looking at fleet size, SAA is definitely a larger airline than KQ. The modern perspective is quite subjective, are we looking at average fleet age (an airline in a fleet renewal programme will always "look" more modern) or type of a/c (which a/c type is more modern than the other :? ) or modus operandi .... there are too many factors.

Rumors from some reliable sources indicate that SAA would like to get rid of their 738s and KQ has some interest in them.

On a broader perspective, i think the main contenders for this award are KQ, SAA, and ET. The competition between these airlines on almost every route they fly is intense and they generally have a high levels of service coupled with good equipment. In the end it will be a tight one to call and may the best airline win.

I voted KQ.

Cheers,

Walter.

Breathtaking :!:

Now they just need to put some 757s in that livery :thumbsup2: (It'll never happen since they are going all Airbus  )

Hello

RYR...it's a free Poll , so if someone finds MK deserves that title , than it his personal meaning. If he think MK is the largest ofcause of it's 747's...well we'll see.... I'm busy with the 2 most chance having airlines for that title , SAA and MS.

The SAA fleet is almost finished...but it will still take a wile.

Best regards: Yannick ;)

They fist bought the 738, and decided a couple of years after that to go for an all airbus fleet... I believe I have heard that with the hedge-fund crisis they decided to stick with the 738 and drop the A320 (only the 20, not the 19's). Correct me if I'm wrong...

Over the next few years Egyptair will have a fleet of A320s, A321s, A332s, A342s, B772s and ERJ-145. The latter is expected to be ordered very soon.

I think that qould qualify MS as the most modern African airline

I also voted for Egyptair, since they are trying to lift the quality-level of aviation in Egypt, are streamlining their fleet and will have a modern and large fleet within two to three years. I would not exclude MS to order two or three A380 for their american services.
SAA will remain bigger but as an ex-resident of Cairo my heart goes to MS....
