Why OO- in Belgium?

Post by Jensmu »

Hello,

why do Belgian resgistrations start with OO? Normally, it's somehow the name of the country, like D for Germany and OE for austria.

I also noticed, that the Belgian army does have registrations starting with CB!?!

Regards,
Jens

Except in a few cases, the initial letter(s) has/have nothing to do with the name of the country.

Early Belgian registrations were O-BAAA to O-BZZZ.

Later this became OO-AAA to OO-ZZZ, except that when thhe Congo was a Belgian colony it received the registrations OO-CAA to OO-CZZ.

In the not so distant past, Belgian Air Force aircraft had registrations OT-xxx and planes of the light aviation of the army had OL-xyy ('x' being a letter and 'y' a digit).

This exact same thing has been discussed a few years ago, with a very good explanation of one of the members. But I guess it won't be that easy to find it again. All I remember is that it has to do with radio communication from long time ago.
