Yes it was and it lost to the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy !
maybe if the B747 won maybe the C-5 would be here now as a airliner rather than a military airlifter... :P :?:

Well, Seb, If you really didn't know, it was a very good guess, caus it was indeed the LET-410.

LET-410 is the only one Czech passenger aircraft I know...

So the question is (stick with engines :) ):
Why there is an hole near the air intake on this engine.

dumping of the pressurised air (of 200°C) to heat up the leading edge of the enginecowling. It has to circulate, so it has to be dumped somewhere cause it can't keep turning in circles ...

Don't knwo if this is correct, it's just a guess ...

You're 100% right! The air is used to de-ice the air intake cowl and, as you said, the hole dumps the air into atmosphere.

Your turn Andries...

Look at this page of CFM engines.

http://www.cfm56.com/engines/index.html

As you can see, most have a sharp spinner, whilst the CFM56-3 has a spinner with a rounded top.

My question : Why has this one got a rounded top ?

It does have something to do with rain/hail ... but the answer is not correct (though it's very very close)

Some information for the benefit for all  without malice

Preeminent role in the CFM56 family success in the market for 100 to 200 seat single-aisle aircraft .

Industry standard for reliability is close to 4,500 engines into service, which have logged over 106 million flight hours.

First advanced derivative engine of the CFM56 family, the CFM56-3 engine is perfectly tailored for the needs of the short–to–medium range Boeing 737-300, -400 and -500 aircraft ( 737 Classic ).

The CFM56-3C1 model, which covers all CFM56–3 ratings, offers total commonality over the 737 Classic fleet, resulting in large inventory savings in parts and tools and hence reduced operating costs.

My attempt to answer

Because
it is not round but rather ELLIPTICAL. And this elliptical spinner not only helps for improved hail/rain ingestion but also

Has expected first run life of more than 16,000 engine flight hours

Meets most severe inclement weather threat

Is setting new industry standards for reliability

Has 40 percent margin, compared to ICAO NOx limit
Aum Sweet Aum.
