Remember, this is India we're talking about. By the time every possible government commission and sub-commission has examined it, sent it to the next commission who adds a bit to it and then sends it back to the first, who then... well you get the picture... by that time, we'll probably be a few years on.

Just think of the Indian Airlines deal for Airbus narrowbodies: they've decided they want them several YEARS ago, and they STILL haven't even ordered them. All because of the insane amounts of bureaucracy.

Indians may be in a bigger hurry for those Boeings than you think.

Let us focus on planes, its going to be a big mix and match of 737, 777 and the 787 :o , but it is just not planes, AI needs to improve their service standards, with low on time, no PTV and the plane interiors being dirty and some crammed, no pretty air hostesses 8) , at times rude and unresponding staff. AI still needs to climb a long way.

But one thing I have heard is that, AI livery is liked by may especially the windows.

By the way where will be these new planes flying ? I mean the routes, or will they be serving the ministers as charter planes most of the time.( to much of corruption and politics, who knows it may be another Bofors in the making).

Well lets hope for the good. 8)

Air India like alot of the so called "big" carriers need a big upheavel and makeover.

Like United in Usa and Alitalia in Italy Time to sort this crap out or drop it all togther.

Maybe this purchase IF << it actually does go through will start the trend.
But if it gets all political again boeing could be drawn into a stupid game.

I think AI will order some new planes with in the next 10 years, because otherwise their desperate Leasing frenzy which is happening right now will add up to tooo much for them to bear once Jet Airways gets established internationally.
