MAN 08/03/2005 Report & Photos

Post by Comet »

Here is part 2 of my MAN spotting report. This was a far more successful day than the previous one - the weather was a little brighter and there were some good baggings to be had, and some firsts for me

We walked across to the airport from Bewley's Hotel, and headed to the cafe area again. It had rained earlier on, and it was still wet in some places, but the cloud didn't thicken again until later in the afternoon, shortly before we were due to fly. Some of these photos are taken from the cafe area, and some from the departure lounge in terminal 3.

Morning is the best time to see the heavies - the 747s, 767s, 777s and A330s, we saw them all and bagged examples of each type. Later on you see more 737s, A320s and smaller regional jets.

Image
The American 767, don't know where it was going.

Image
An Aer Arann ATR42. This aircraft was pushed back shortly after I took this photo, only to be returned to the terminal a few minutes later, before it had even reached the taxiway out of the "square" near the cafe. Eventually it was taken away, it obviously had quite a severe fault to prevent its flight leaving. Aer Arann fly to destinations in both Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic.

Image
An Air France 737. The more common AF equipment on the MAN-CDG service is the A320.

Image
One of the 747s from that day. This is Air Atlanta Cargo.

Image
Air Berlin 737. Taken from the departure lounge.

Image
Finnair. I much preferred their older livery to this one.

Image
British Airways 757 approaching past an Aer Lingus 737. I had not seen this ridiculous nose ring design for years. I thought they had maybe ditched it.

Image

Image
The 757 is a beautiful, photogenic, elegant aircraft, and that nose ring does nothing for it at all

Image
British Airways Avro RJ.

Image
A British Airways 737 sporting a tartan tail. I thought the only aircraft with World Tails were the smaller ones, that shows how often I get chance to spot.

Image
A bmi baby 737 straight after touch down, with the thrust reversers still open. Taken from the departure lounge.

Image
bmi baby heading to the terminal.

Image
Yet another variant of the Star Alliance livery for this bmi A321.

Image

Image
bmi - how many of these liveries do you have?

Image
The title of this photo is "busy scene" because it shows the bustle around that area of the terminal at the middle of the morning. You have Ryanair, British Airways, Eastern and Lufthansa.

Image
CSA 737 taken from the departure lounge.

Image
Emirates A330.

Image
First Choice (formerly Air 2000) 757.

Image
Ryanair 737-200 arriving.

Image
Two Irish airlines!

Image
My first ever Helios!

Image

Image
Lufthansa 737 just after take off.

Image
Our old friend OO-VLV, the nicest VLM aircraft I flew on, owing to its leather seats!

Image
The PIA 777. Last time I captured a PIA aircraft on video it was a 747-200. This is my first sighting of their new colours 777!

Image
PIA and British Airways.

Image
The arrival of SN2173.

Image
The departure of SN2174. We wish we had booked this flight instead of SN2178, then we would have been in Brussels several hours earlier!

Image
Singapore 747-400 just after take off.

Image
The British Airways Dash 8 with a tartan tail after take off. This aircraft is a regular at MAN.

Image
This is my favourite of all the BA aircraft! I first saw G-EMBK on 30th March 2004 in BHX, and I thought it suited its tail very well, as I think the World Tails looked stupid on the main fleet but great on the smaller aircraft! I asked British Airways Virtual if this aircraft was available in Flight Sim, and for ages I had a photo of it as my desktop. I was pleased to see it again, and this time it was operating flight BA1628, the 14:00 departure to AMS.

Image
Thomas Cook 757 after take off.

Image
Turkish Airlines 737 with winglets.

US Airways A330 just becoming airborne.

All in all this was a great day. I just had one (very big) disappointment. I remember sn26567 saying about the Syrian 747SP in MAN on a Tuesday, and I just hoped I would see it because the SP is rarely seen here and I wanted to bag one before they were withdrawn. In the event, the Syrian flight was operated by a very mundane aircraft in comparison and I still have not bagged a 747SP.

The world tail liveries are even on the big planes. http://www.airliners.net/open.file/792797/L/

But if I remember well BA is painting progressively all planes back to the traditional tail.

I know the larger ones had the World Tails, but there seems to be a higher proportion of the regional fleet which still have them compared to the flag tail. Apart from one, all the larger BA aircraft we saw had the flag tail. It will be a shame to see the end of the World Tails on the regional fleet.

... but it will be a lot easier to recognise a BA plane. That's the price to pay for brand recognition!

It's easy to recognise a BA plane now when you know they are the only carrier with World Tails. bmi are the worst offenders for confusing liveries - I counted five different ones, including two Star Alliance schemes, last week.

I am getting all these photos uploaded onto a site where they will show better, they have been too compressed to fit in on the page and the quality has gone a bit. I will post links to the better photos when they are all added.

Tonight, VC10 offered to buy me a flight in the 747SP, as it flies LHR-MAN-Damascus, but there are no LHR-MAN tickets available with Syrian, so that is disappointing. She said it would have been a great treat to actually fly in the SP as well as just seeing it and then have a day spotting in MAN after we land, but no sites I have found sell tickets for that section of the route so I am very disappointed

It would indeed have been very surprising that Syrian Air got domestic traffic rights in the UK.

From Brussels they do however have traffic rights to Amsterdam, but it is an A320, not a B747SP.

I would have been more than happy to see the SP and photograph it, but a flight in it would have been a real treat and something very special.

The LHR-MAN service by Syrian's SP no longer operates, that is why I was unable to get a ride in it. The LHR-DAM service is straight through instead of calling at MAN, and MAN has its own A320-operated service to Damascus. That is a b*m

Thanks ehamspotter

I am still loooking through them myself, as when I take aircraft photos I concentrate on the plane in front of me and often there is some activity going off in the background which you don't see straight away, like the ones of the bmi A321 with the TCX aircraft taking off on one and another aircraft taking off on a different shot of the bmi plane.

Next stop BHX

Nice pictures, it's really interesting to look through them, and makes me dreaming away......

I also get the feeling that I got to go to AMS/EHAM to do some spotting myself again (last time was last summer  ).

Thanks Andy, you are lucky to live so near MAN. I think my next visit will be November when we have another beer buying trip to Brussels. I might get a spotting trip in June but that is not certain yet. We usually avoid the weekend travelling because the trains will be hellish busy between Scarborough and anywhere (Tuesday and Wednesday are favourites for me and Monday when we are flying off somewhere).

Sometime I hope to get the Qatar aircraft, that would be a first for me. I was most pleased with the US Airways A330 at take off, although a little blurry that is the first time I have bagged a bigger aircraft just as it left the runway and had it all in the shot. I have lost count of the number of bmibaby photos I deleted before I got the two in this thread.
