738's transatlantic?

I was reading someones comments on Airliners.net, and someone said they were flying non-stop from DAL-ANC. This is 7.5 hours long. Then the topic arose, could a 737-800 go across the atlantic? What do you guys think? Personally, I think it would be a great market for low cost cariers like ryanair, and easyjet. http://www.airliners.net/discussions/ge ... n/2019211/ read for yourself

I know Privatair flies from Düsseldorf, Germany to NY with a B737-700BBJ and that the Sobelair B737-800 flew non-stop from Seattle to Brussels, off course without pax.

Exactly, without pax is a different story. If carriers can do it with pax, transatlantic flights will get a lot cheaper; which would be a brilliant thing :D

The BBJ also carries just 40 passengers or so I taught, all with no much luggage...

yeah, there would be weight restrictions. I wish a company would come out with a small long range aircraft. Not Boeing or Airbus, but Embraer, or Canadair. Embraer just came out with that ERJ-190, how far can that go?

woops, sorry. I would love to fly Easyjet or someone like that next time I go to England. I've been looking for Stansted flights for a long while, Maybe this is the call? I think it would be a great thing.

AF will lauch a JFK-LYS with a A319-100LR fitted with 48 seats (and 3 ACT*s).

ACT= Additional Center Tank
It means not too much place for luggage... So no FR B737-800s in full coach class over the Atlantic ocean.

It's kind of wierd if you think about it. The spotters in JFK are going to be quite confused! Wouldn't it be cheaper to configure a larger aircraft like the A321 or A320, so you have a larger passenger capcity?

An A320 (And even worth an A321) is heavier than the A319 and still have the same "small" wing, with only a too little fuel capacity for a transatlantic flight. But what could do Airbus is an A322 ala B757 (narrow body with an all bigger new wing)...
An A319 can be fitted with a maximum of 6 ACTs, 4 in the aft cargo hold and 2 in the forward cargo hold. An ACT (A320 family) holds 2,992 liters of fuel.

whats the point of flying a small aircraft commercially over long didtances it gets xpensive for the fuel cost aswell as airport crap it would be overkill for a lowcost airline without a 200pax a/c flying the atlantic in my opinion .
i would fly the least 200pax to the usa from here but no less otherwise too much money wasted on almost no profits unless you have maybe 50 a/c flying it constantly... :idea:

x-prise. What if their is a small market for a route? It's better to operate it with a smaller a/c than wasting a large one. The air france situation for example, the 777 or A330 would be a waste of money, as it is bigger and empty. Lyon is somwhere vactioners will want to go, as Paris is very urban. The best thing for air france to do i think is outfit the A319 with buisness seats. Does this help?

i agree with you about a small full a/c rather that a empty large a/c but when it comes to economics i think large is better depending on the route and the market. the thing is you have to know exactly where pax from a location will go to so as to adapt to that market but ofcourse a small a/c low cost airline would be exalent but i dont think it would make any profits with 40pax cuz the frequency of flights there arent enough unless you do extremely expensive first class so who cares i dont see any market across the atlantic without more than 150-200 pax other than with a HUGE low cost carrier such as southwest or ryanair doing it cuz for them it wont make a difference unless every flight to the states is by ryanair so the other airlines have no transatlantic market.

Yes, but if Ryanair flys to lets say La Guardia, It will be more convenient for connections, It is closer to New York, and if they offer flights from even $390 USD roundtrip, they're beating carriers like Virgin Atlantic

yes i agree on a long period of time yes but still a lower price and lower pax could get costly but as i have said before i think ryanair could do it with their soon to be southwest sized fleet without to much of a loss...
its nice to see a little debate here on this site...
by the way i was thinking of $200 roundrip walkup price and 150 1month advance booking...
advertising good booking site and such should help a lcc to achieve a exellent market in that area of interest...
its an excellent market i would like to see some research by ryanair or such into it
we see bmi doing it now so just wait ryanair should follow.

Hey, no airline bashing! Even if it may not be doing it's best...at all.....right now, it's the Irish flag carier. Then again, Air Cnada is my national flag carier, and it sucks

I really would NOT want to be stuck in an LCC's aircraft for a six hour flight. I heard Ryanair's seats do not recline?

Do not forget that there was already one LCC that operated low-cost flights over the Atlantic. People Express had flights between Newark and London, charging $149 one-way.
Laker also did operate cheap flights over the Atlantic, but both the carriers do not exist anymore today.
