Demol,

are you aware of the situation that not every SNBA flight between BRU and CDG is carrying passengers?
The service is only for passengers connecting to Africa, not for business pax (otherwise it wouldn't be smart not having an evening flight). So SN flies an empty aircraft to CDG to pick up the passengers for Africa, later in the morning an aircraft brings passengers back to CDG who arrived from Africa. Then the airplane returns empty to BRU.
I think the Thalys agreement is a wise move for SN Brussels Airlines.

Demol: as an enthusiast I prefer to fly to CDG of course, but comme on: which business man can you convince to fly to CDG if you can go by train to Paris Nord???

You avoid check in queues, security control, delays, etc etc etc.

The codeshare on the Thalys is an extremely good decision.

BTW: why being so negative? If SN announces a loss, you are blaming them. Now they announce a profit, you are being pessimistic about the next quarters.

SN is a NEW company. The fact they can announce a profit within less than 2 years is not bad at all.

Give them some time...

I think even more people prefer the comfort and speed of Thalys. I go regularly to Paris, but the last time I flew must have been 20 years ago, to take a connecting flight to TYO. Else, I use Thalys, for which I get a large comfortable first class seat, a good breakfast and a short hop (1 hr 25 min) to be right in the centre of Paris. Even at the time of TEEs (2 hr 20 min) I preferred to go by train.

Some additional news about the SN BA annoucements:

The recent announcements to the press about SN Brussels Airlines' profits and new destinations were made in Newcastle. It is obviously one of its UK destinations in codeshare with SN BA. Why there?

Because SN BA has signed an agreement to sponsor the local football club. This will lead to an assistance to the formation centre for young players, advertisements in the stadium and the possibility to give free seats (in the stadium, not in the planes) to good customers.

Rob Kuijpers also said that it was the first time since very long that a Belgian airline made a profit. That is simply not true: Virgin Express regularly makes profits.

Rob Kuijpers mentioned that the cash reserves of SN BA were still healthy: more than 100 million €, to which soon will be added the 20 million € coming from the sale of LHR slots. Since February 2002 only 15 million € cash have been used.

For the future, Kuijpers is also confident. He does not think that the debt to SN Airholding is a problem. It will be solved before 2006 because a debt can be re-negotiated. If he says so...

Finally, the agreement with Thalys will enable SN BA to save a lot of money by stopping the costly flights to CDG (indeed, with two empty flights a day...). SN BA will finance the occupation of one to two railway cars in the train.

I hope these explanations will answer of lot of your questions, guys (and Comet, if she reads me in Mechelen).

The following article was published on the BBC website about the SNBA sponsor contract of Newcastle:

Airline backs young Newcastle stars

Newcastle United hope to qualify for the Champions League
A major financial deal has been signed by Newcastle United and Belgian airline SN Brussels.

The company is to become a "designated partner" of the new Newcastle United Academy, supporting the club's youth programme which is based at its new training headquarters in Little Benton.

A spokesman for the airline said the deal was worth "a five figure sum to Newcastle United over the coming 12 months".

In return for its support, SN Brussels Airlines branding will appear in official match day programmes and in the St James' Park stadium.

The airline, which was founded in February 2002, hopes to attract Newcastle United supporters when they travel to European away fixtures.

'Grass roots'

It took over many of the routes of former Belgian state airline Sabena, including the Newcastle to Brussels route.

Philip Saunders, an executive vice-president of SN Brussels Airlines, said: "We are very pleased to be able to support football at the grass roots level in Newcastle.

"The north-east of England is a very important destination for us as an airline, with passengers using SN Brussels Airlines to fly not only to Brussels, but also throughout Europe and Africa."

Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd said: "We are very pleased to have SN Brussels Airlines on board as a partner for our academy."

The club is playing Partizan Belgrade in the final qualification round to get through to the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.

If they progress it will mean at least three overseas matches.

Hi all,

apparently there seem to be some misunderstandings between myself and other readers of this forum...

Just to make things clear I am very happy that SN Brussels Airlines made a profit in the second quarter but we have to take into account that the first quarter wasn't that nice (as well as the entire aviation industry in the first quarter)

So keep our fingers crossed for the 3th and 4th quarter which I think they will be quite good as well and let's hope we can present a nice annual report to our shareholders!

Mister Kuypers also told that the Sobelair-agreement is not discussable as long as the aircraft-leasings and the cabin-cockpit loans are not arranged (according to Het Laatste Nieuws).

ciao,

Bart

It is great that SNBA made profit and I do hope this will continue. Everybody is speaking about the profit on pax flights, but I would like to know the proportion of this profit generated by the cargo to and from Africa.
I do not have any figures but I am convince that the most important part of the profit comes from the cargo.
If you look at the rates, about € 2.50 to 3.00/Kg...., for exemple the rates to Dubai are actually less than € 1.00/Kg, you can make a quick calculation.
Sorry for these comments.

Sabena_690 wrote:@Sonny: almost impossible that SN starts it's own flights to Chicago. First question: why would they do this? They would need an additional aircraft, but nevertheless: if AA flies to ORD, why can't SN just keep it's code on the AA flights? Even more with the winter season (= low yield) coming, this would be a stupid move from SN, and they are smart enough to know this.
Nope sorry, guys a mistake from me!! But i heard something on the radio from Chicago. Maybe they where asking on American Airlines to do more flights to Chicago?? Who knows.

With only one (early) daily connection By the way, why did it take so long to get the deal signed And why isn't BIAC or any other airline participating in the deal
I think it is because ther is no other airline in Brussels that nees a feeder service. So if BIAC should follow SNBA it would only be a positive thing for SNBA and not for other airlines. Demol we (Belgians) have only one airline that fly's to destinations that are not or less served by the big airlines ( Air France, KLM, BA ex.........). SNBA haves also only one flight to Paris a day so if they use a single connection a day to Paris by Thalis, or is that not logical. If the service is a succes they can add a frequentie to Paris. So now the replace the aircraft by the train and see what will happen.

We all know that SNBA still has a long way to go, but one should admit that making profits in this hard times is a great achievement anyway.

I think it proofs that SNBA and its management is doing a good job.

There is a real negative atmosphere around SNBA in the Belgian aviation world.

Every decision of SNBA is welcomed with negative comments. And every time people think that they know better, but at the end ... SNBA is making a profit.

All the big carriers in the US and in Europe are struggling for survival.

SNBA had to make a start in very difficult circumstances. Nobody had faith in SNBA (see the load factors of the first months). I also had my doubts.

But nowadays SNBA is proving daily that people were wrong. The way to go is still long, but they are on the right track !!!

Many people are very negative about SNBA and its future, but as it has been mentionned previously they posted a profit , even if it is quarterly. Simultaneously, an airline like Swiss is struggling for survival.
This quarter results for VEX are not as encouraging (0.12 million EUR profit for sales of 58.12 million EUR). I ackowledge that their 1Q was by far more encouraging.
If I have weel understood, this results occured in the period from April to June, and summer load factors are even more encouraging (is this statement correct?).
Seen from outside, I believe the management of SNBA has so far been doing a good job - at least much better than that of former Sabena and of Swiss.

It is always good news to make profits even if it is only during the second quarter and after a very disapointing first quater.

What I can see concerning the third quarter is that all the African flights are fully booked and with pricy tickets. The downside is that sometimes we have to leave passengers behind (30 was my worst out of FIH).

Another slight downside is about punctuality. It is increasingly difficult to leave on time with a full house. Missing passenger, refusal of a pax by immigration, overbooking solving, luggage search and removal...you name it..... la rançon de la gloire.

Keep it high!!! and I am waiting eagerly for fleet expansion and new destinations.
By the way I have recently heard (yesterday to be precise) that if nothing changes in the mean time, we will go back to ROB (Monrovia) as from the 1st of October.

Happy landings

Bravo767,

This is good news. Do you know whether other airlines are flying to the same destination?

First of all I would like to say that I'm very happy for SNBA. I would like them to continue like this

Secondly, I would like to say to Demol that he hasn't to be that pessimestic ( "analytic" as you say  ). Isn't it better to make a small profit than a loss in the second quarter :?:  Of course it is :!:

And BTW it seems that the loadfactors are still good in september. As André (sn26567) mentioned earlier in another topic his flights to and from Nice were nearly full and my flights to and from Florence had a loadfactor of 80% and 100%.

I think that SNBA will probably have an even greater profit at the end of the third quarter, since July, August and Spetember (until now) worked very well, or at least better than the months in the second quarter.

Ciao
