Satellite (Pier C)
Hello,
I arrived in Brussels again after some years and I noticed some changes: The new A Pier replaced the old Pier C. Pier A is quite modern and full of light, but the walking distance is horrible, particulary with heavy hand luggage.
I saw that the satellite and the old Terminal building were still existing, but impossible to enter (I was told by BIAC that it is hermetically sealed). But I was very surprised to find a plane standing at the satellite!
What will happen to the old airport buildings? In my opinion, the satellite was a great building, also from the architecture.
I remember numerous visits to Brussels in the 80s, arriving from YMX with a Sabena DC-10, but I have only vague pictures on my mind of the interior of the building. I know that you walked over thick carpets leading to the baggage claim, and at one point, you could see the people looking for their family members through glas. I think this was there where in the old check-in Terminal which is still accessible (and used?) today, where there are now some walls and the police.
I would really like to see some pictures from inside the old building, especially inside the satellite. I searched in the internet and airliners.net but was not able to find any.
Perhaps you could help me?
Thank you a lot,
Jens Müller

Hello
Think the same about it too. Where are the glorious times when there use to stand DC-10's , B747's and others from Sabena and Panam...etc....it is indeed a remarkable nice architecture and it would be pitty if it's gone.
It's real BRU nostalgic.
There are every day several planes standing there...(probably because it's cheaper) but i noticed that they all load/unload pax with the stairs so...the gates are not anymore in use.
Too bad...they should re-open it for higher capacity.
Wednesday i saw the Excel airways B737-400 TF-ELJ and the United airlines B767-300etops N653UA 'new star alliance colors' standing there.
Oh I love that wonderful day....I'll never forget the AF1 and the others.
Best regards: Yannick :jump2: :mexwave: :wow:

The planes that are parked there, usually don't load or unload passengers there. The spaces are used to free the gates at the A and B terminals, for planes that have a bigger ground time in BRU.
I don't think there are allowed to tear down the sattelite, it's a protected piece of architecture.
Greetings,
Jan

KLM F50s park near the C pier to unload/load passengers.
I got off their F50s on December 18th and then we went by bus to the terminal. During the 'bus trip' which was a little before 2pm or so, brussels was deserted. I think all in all I saw 4 planes
. (1 at the B pier) the 3 others at the A pier. (Thjs does not include possible planes at the cargo, abelag or military appron), nor those that could have been parked on the west side of the A pier as I couldn´t see that side.
Oh well the advantage of going by bus is that I didn´t have to do the long walk to the terminal and had a pretty good view of Brussels apt.

Never heard about hand luggage limitations: dims and weights, Jens?Jensmu wrote: the walking distance is horrible, particulary with heavy hand luggage. Jens Müller
CABIN BAGGAGE
Cabin Baggage Limits - the following items must not exceed 4 kilograms in weight. If combined weight is more than 4kgs they must be checked-in and carried in the aircraft hold.
All airline members of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) have agreed to observe the following cabin baggage regulations. The articles listed may be carried free of charge over and above the free checked baggage allowance (but not exceeding 4 kilograms).
* A lady's handbag, pocket book or purse, which is appropriate to normal travelling dress and is not being used as a container for the transportation of articles which would otherwise be regarded as baggage.
* An overcoat, wrap or blanket.
* An umbrella or walking stick.
* A small camera and/or a pair of binoculars.
* A reasonable amount of reading matter for the flight.
* Infant's food for consumption on flight.
* A pair of crutches and/or other prosthetic device for the passenger's use provided that the passenger is dependent upon them.
* Wheelchairs and infant's carry baskets (these items will be stowed in the aircraft hold).
All Other Articles - including overnight bags, briefcases, personal computers, ladies vanity cases, large size cameras etc. taken into the cabin as hand baggage are usually subject to the following conditions
*One Briefcase or One Small Bag not exceeding: depth 23cm (9in), height 34cm (13in), length 48cm (19in), maximum weight 4kg.
*One soft-sided (non-rigid frame) suitpak or garment bag not exceeding: thickness 11cm, width 60cm, length 114cm.
With 4 kilos one can walk miles.....
what happened to me in December flying Brittish Midlands: boarding was first in the tent of peir A. Than a shuttle bus all accross the other side, and yes, there she was, the old terminal, brown and grey. We were parked next to the Embraer and I could have a final look from closeby at the old building.
It is not a beauty, but the curved wall is quite remarkable. For those who do remember: the responsable person who choosed the horrible linoleum/marmoleum floor cover in yellow two tones (green?) should be sent to Quantanamo for a crime against humanity.

Thank your for your first replys.
Hand Luggage: I would never give my notebook as normal luggage as I think it's much too dangerous that it could be damaged or stolen. My bag with all my accessoires and the notebook itself weights over 5kg and during the whole voyage it starts to hurt in the back.
Brussels:
I Lived in Montréal before and visited family in Brussels often. Since 11 years now, I live in Germany and did not come to the airport often. But I had a nice flight STR-BRU-STR begin February and there I noticed te changes. (btw. only 7 passengers in a LH CRJ-100 with place for about 50 pax)
No reply yet for my question in regard of interiour photos of the old terminal and satellite. Can anyone help me?

Un-checked luggage movers....
Does it operate on a truck battery?Stoney wrote: 4kg is not enough, my laptop alone weighs already 4...
Experience will tell you, and so will security people at airports, that very few airlines check these weights.
I have seen a person with a tango accordeon in the front, a rucksack and in each hand a kind of brief case. And at the gate he asked the boarding agent to take his boarding pass from his jacket pocket.....
What she did, and let him board the plane....
Usually the only ones to complain, are the passenger(s) sitting next to such bulky handbaggage movers.
And these un-ckecked luggage movers are the ones who complain the gates are so far away.....
