Objectives: Canon or Sigma?

Post by Airbus319 »

I am looking for a lens for my new Canon EOS 3000V. I visited three shops at Aachen, but all said something different. But now I think one of the following should be the best for me:

Sigma 70-300 4-5,6 APO Macro Super

Canon EF 75-300 4-5,6 USM III

In the first shop they said, that the difference between the two concerning the quickness of the autofocus is very very small, and that I would have good airplane-pictures with both. In the second shop the woman told me, that the quickness of the autofocus is dependent on the camera and the objective doesn`t matter.
Can you give me any advice what I should do? Please don`t for get that I am a student and have to watch on my purse! ;-)

have a look at the pics i make, they are almost all made with the Sigma 70-300, this will give you an idee of what it's capable off
this collection is made with my Canon 300D http://tfp.fotopic.net/c367344.html
this one with my new 20D http://tfp.fotopic.net/c421296_1.html
same objective, other cam ; the lens on the 20D performs better on AF, quicker and more accurate, thus you get better pics :)
so i would'nd say the lens don't matter for a good autofocus ( it's doing a great deal of the job aswell ) but the cam is certainly very important.
all i can say you, this is a good lens ; nothing more, nothing less, and you won't find better for that price :) the only thing is : you need light to let here perform good, but anyway : pics in dark weather are never that good, even with the L lenses
i personally don't know the Canon, but i've read discussions on fotoforums where this lens did'nd made a good impression, but there's a version with I.S. who would be better, and more expensive  ( again : it's not out of personnel experience i say this, maybe a member with this lens on his cam, can give you a better advise on this lens  )
hope this helps you a bit :)

Thanks for the links to your pictures. They (the pictures in dark weather, too) are really good - better than this I made with my (very) old camera sometime. Am I right, that most of them are taken from "the wall" at Steenokkerzeel? My parents are planning a one-day-trip to Brussel and maybe I`ll go there then.
The special of the Canon is the ultrasonic-motor (USM), one photoshop said, it is faster, another said that it is only more quiet.
I think I`ll take the Sigma....!

There is also Tamron which makes very good lenses. I use a Tamron 28-300 and I'm totally satisfied with it.

some are indeed from the wall, but most of them are taken at the "regular" spot at 25L

USM is a plus indeed, i have a 55-200 with USM and it is quieter and faster, but when you focus a few times before you actually take the pic by holding the button half-down, there will be no difference between USM or not  as for the noise, i consider that as negligable :P
and as i said before ; the cam play's a big role in the game  :D
the Tamron that Avro mentions is a very good lens to, and it has the big advantage to start at 28mm !! that can make a big difference when the subject comes close (and big) and will let you take pics on, for instance, an airshow without having to change lenses, and so minimise the risk of getting dust in you're cam ( big problem of digital cams  ) and you can "travel light" as you don't have to take other lenses with you.
this is a lens i certainly would consider

I am also using the Tamron 28-300. At first I was very satisfied with it, but now that I've been using it for a while, it's starting to give me blurry shots. I hear same stories from other people who use the lens ...

As soon as I'v got the money, I'm getting myself a Canon 28-300 L IS USM

Untill then I'm stuck to using my Canon 75-300 and in desperate cases my 28-300 ...

Greetz,

At "my" German forum someone told me, that I should better keep my hands off 28-300 lenses!

The aspect of "light travelling" is not so important. I would have an 28-90 and a 70-300. From my experiences I say, that I won`t have to change very often. At DUS I only need the 28-90 (at the train station), at CGN, FRA and MUC the 70-300. Perhaps the 70-300 would be enough for "the wall" at BRU, too.

I've ordered my 300D last saturday also with that Sigma 70-300 lens ... I'm glad i bought it ... If I would bought my cam at Top-foto I would have taken the Canon 75-300 probably with USM & IS but at topvisionshop they had a special offer with this Sigma 75-300 included so I took that one instead. Cam with lens should arrive tomorrow...I'll let you know how it works for me !

Two weeks ago I had a long phone call with a friend of us who is a photographer. The result was (or is) that I am waiting now for the postman bringing a parcel with the Sigma 70-300 APO inside!
I will test it at my first spotting trip this year on March, 19th at DUS!
