DHL

Post by SN30952 »

The government and the international freight forwarding company, PT DHL have established an airport emergency team that would work under the coordination of Transportation Ministry to distribute logistics to Aceh.

"I have called on the Transportation Minister to overcome the traffic jam in Medan and Banda Aceh," Vice President Jusuf Kalla said on Monday.

Kalla said, the team would manage the flow of humanitarian aid through airports to accelerate its distribution to tsunami affected regions.

The relief efforts in Aceh have been stalled when the airport of Banda Aceh was closed yesterday after a Boeing 737 skidded on the runway.

Officials in India's Andaman and Nicobar islands have begun taking aid directly to victims of last week's tsunami, rather than evacuating them.

In addition to ocean-going relief ships, this is the largest
relief operation the world has ever seen. The aviation component
is, of course, both vital and the largest of its kind, ever. It must give
crews a special sense of satisfaction to fly such missions. It would
be good to hear from some of them here.

antonov offers help

Post by V-Bird »

Antonov offered the United Nations some An-124 planes. The an-124 is designed to operate from grassfields on regular base, so she don`t need a runway. Also the pilots are trained to land the an-124 with a minimum of comunications with the ground.

heard on the german radio 101.50 das hitradio journal...can anybody confirm this?

China Southern Airlines

Post by SN30952 »

China Southern Airlines is continuing its 747 freight airlift of emergency medical supplies to the flood ravaged areas of Indonesia and Sri Lanka.

China Southern has taken both of its 747-400 freighters off-line from its standard Europe/China and USA/China commercial service and has pushed them into emergency airlift duty to Colombo, Sri Lanka and Medan, Indonesia.

“We are pleased to be part of our nation’s ongoing commitment to aid the hardest hit areas of last week’s tidal wave,” said Mr. Li Kun, Executive Vice President, China Southern Airlines.
Mr. Li added that, “each of our freighters is stuffed full with medicines, including sterile gauzes and bandages as well as food and emergency tents.”
He also said that each 747-400 freight airlift has also included local language interpreters.

A Boeing 737 cargo plane carrying aid touched down from Jakarta around 1am (0500 AEDT) on Tuesday morning and was turning when its left engine and undercarriage hit a cow that had strayed onto the runway from nearby fields.

The left side of the chartered TRI-MG Airlines jet collapsed, blocking the strip to all fixed-wing flights.
Engineers there were trying to find a way to jack the damaged side of the plane up so its broken undercarriage could be welded into place and the aircraft could be rolled clear.
"We don't have anything here big enough to drag it," he said.
Australian air force ground crews were some of the first on the scene after the accident and unloaded medical and electrical equipment with a forklift.
"We've got the only real forklift here," Amberley (Austr) based flying officer Carl Lorrigan said.

 Here one sees how these airports operate: not even a real forklift is present....

A number of foreign aircraft has unloaded their cargo consisting of relief aid for tsunami victims in Aceh and North Sumatera at the Hang Nadim International Airport, Batam.

Some foreign aircraft were compelled to unload their cargo at Batam Airport, because Polonia Airport in the North Sumatera capital was already too crowded with similar activities, Riau Governor Ismeth Abdullah said here Wednesday. So far, the Government has declared the Polonia Airport as one of the relief aid distribution centers.
