Virgin Blue

Virgin Blue selected this aircraft, since it believes that future growth is vital for the airline to survive in the future, yet instead of flying the more populare routes, the 190 will fly the less dense routes, thus feeding the larger 737 aircraft. It is doubtable if this will work, since the main low cost sector is point to point, instead of the hub-and-spoke system used by larger airlines. Virgin`s choice is not that shocking, since jetBlue announced earlier this year that they too would select this aircraft. Virgin Blue will be one of the fwe low cost airlines flying with a duel fleet."

I would suspect that KLMCityhopper is not familiar with Virgin Blue's operation, which in many ways is similar in Australia to that of jetBlue in the USA. Virgin Blue is in reality a network carrier with some of the aspects of a LCC: from my home city of Hobart it offers connecting flights (with checked-through baggage facilities) to many cities, and competes with both Qantas, a full-service carrier, and Jetstar, a real LCC whose model is Ryanair.
Having a second model of aircraft would enable the carrier to operate a better service, with better frequency and more connection options, to many secondary centres, where the 737-800 might be too large.

Welcome to the Luchtzak community rerj37!

Small detail though: it's not KLM cityhopper (the airline) who made the article, but its KLMCityhopper (the user of Luchtzak.be) who submitted the news...

Thank you - I'm pleased to be here.
I think I realised that "KLM Cityhopper" was what the site calls a nickname, for a poster, and not the airline.
I'm not going to pass myself off as a Virgin, however.
Virgin Blue - the red-liveried airline named thus as a result of a competition, and because of the Australian use of "Blue" as a nickname for a person with red hair - has had a dream run since its start. The collapse of Ansett, for many years one of two major domestic carriers, gave the fledgling a magnificent opportunity to expand rapidly in competition with Qantas, and a fleet of 45 737-800s and 700s, not counting 4 assigned to its international subsidiary Pacific Blue, is now busily operating all over Australia. While only operating a single class, and using a simplified computer booking system, it is now routinely carring over a million passengers a month.

I live in Hobart, Tasmania: there are no international flights here, and Qantas mainline has priced itself out of all but the expense-account market, and reduced its flights. Qantas subsidiary, Jetstar in some cases undercuts Virgin Blue, but does not have full Australian coverage yet. You got a good price on Melbourne-Launceston!

:offtopic: But any idea how is Jetstar marketing verses Virgin Blue.
