Greetings from Ethiopia !

Post by TkPol »

My Greetings to all!

I'am from Ethiopia. I am very pleased to be a member of this great aviation site. I’m working for Ethiopian Airlines. I love the aviation industry and thanks to you guys, I got a bunch of information, analysis, and justification on hot issues in connection with this industry. I’ll try to contribute my share… :D

That's fine TkPol, I have a lot of questions.

Very interesting country Ethiopia!. The oldest independent country in Africa and one of the oldest in the world - at least 2,000 years. It's landlocked, so aviation is an important communication means.
The country has that particularity that it has a -125 m lowest point: Denakil Depression, and the Great Rift Valley is dividing a high plateau with central mountain range. It is susceptible to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and frequent droughts.
There are some 62 million people living over there, with Muslim 45%-50%, Ethiopian Orthodox 35%-40%, animist 12%, other 3%-8% speaking Amharic, Tigrinya, Oromigna, Guaragigna, Somali, Arabic, English (major foreign language taught in schools) and reading and writing only 43% of the total population. (No surprise when you read that on official papers: Ityop'iya Federalawi Demokrasiyawi Ripeblik indicating it is Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia!)
A federal republic, composed of on 9 ethnically-based states, a little bit like Belgium or Switzerland.

A for the ones who like to drink it, it's nice to know coffee originated in Ethiopia. Qat (khat) is legal drug in the sub-region.

Sabena used to fly there in B727, I remember. ET then had the reputation not bringing back what it borrowed. Later the country management came under the authority of the Uganda manager. Therefor I was there too and I remember to have made an hallucinating visit to the very South landing near Lake Rudolph on the border with Kenya. Making an appointment there used to be a very time consuming pastime as there were only few telephonelines, and that did not improve much since I'm told, (some 500.000, and only 100.000 mobiles?)

Ethiopia's main airport is ADD: Bole Airport Runway Length: 4780m / 12139 ft. Runway Elevation: 3000m / 7625 ft. City: Addis Ababa
Image From its hub at Addis Ababa, Ethiopian Airlines (ET) serves 44 international and 30 domestic stations:
Africa: Abidjan, Accra, Addis Ababa, Bamako, Brazzaville, Bujumbura, Cairo, Dar Es-Salaam, Djibouti, Entebbe, Harare, Hargiesa, Johannesburg, Khartoum, Kigali, Kilimanjaro, Kinshasa, Lagos, Lilongwe, Lome, Luanda, Lusaka, Nairobi, N'djamena, Zanzibar.
Europe: Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London, Paris, Rome, Stockholm
America: NewYork and Washington
Gulf / Middle East & Asia: Bangkok, Beijing, Beirut, Hongkong, Dubai, Jeddah, Mumbai, New Delhi, Riyadh, Telaviv.
The fleet: five Boeing 767-300s, which are used for long haul passenger services. Medium-range flights are covered by four Boeing 757s, three Boeing 737-700s (Winglets) and a Boeing 737-260. Five Fokker 50s, and three DHC Twin Otters fly the domestic routes. Image Freighters: a Boeing 757 freighter (ET-AJS Type : B 757-260 Freighter Maximum Gross Weight: Take Off, 115,892 Kg; Landing, 95,254 Kg; Zero Fuel, 90,718 Kg; Operating Weight: 53,069 Kg) and two Lockheed L-100s (ET-AJK/AKG Type : Lockheed L-100; Maximum Gross Weight: Take Off, 70,306 Kg; Landing, 61,234 Kg; Zero Fuel, 57,606 Kg Operating Weight: 34,542 Kg).

Its slogan: Bringing Africa together, is in full contradiction with its own home front situation, that is living longtime with disputes about boundaries with its neighbours....
