BRU-YUL with AC ... but in 2006

Post by ERICAIRLINES »

in travel magazine today, bru yul was first forseen for next summer season, but due to restructuration and lack of aircrafts ...start (or restart) or this route is posponed to 2006 at earliest.
there is a gap in the market, only air transat flies bru yul during the summer season (2 or 3 frequencies)...it was a 50 000 pax route for sabena, mainly leisure,ethnic/family oriented traffic...a bit of business ,but oaci and iata have both their headquarters (world and n american) in the city....yul is now revitalized (after closure of ymx)and easy to use....eastern Ac hub city to more than 50 canadians and usa destinations....af,kl,ba,ac,at,oa,ok,os,lx,lh,az...etc still fly daily or multi daily in summer to yul.......
maybe a better bet for ..beap ??

I'm surprised to find out that there is no scheduled flight anymore from Brussels to Montreal! Brussels these days is more like a regional airport than an international one...

Air Transat used to fly from BRU to YMX, so Montreal Mirabel and not Pierre Trudeau ( or Dorval 8O ), but now that Mirabel is closed... I don't know... does anyone do ?

YUL is Montreal's Pierre Trudeau . Formerly called Dorval because it is located in a suburb called Dorval, 20 km from downtown Montreal. It now handles all Montreal's PAX traffic.

YMX (Mirabel) was Montreal's other airport, 55 km from downtown. It was shut down for PAX traffic 2 months ago, just handles cargo now. It was inaugurated in 1975 just in time for the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Mirabel builders had big plans for it. It was supposed to replace Dorval and was supposed to have handled 40 million PAX by 2003. Since it was too far from the city, airlines and people refused to used it for domestic & US flights. So it ended up handling only International traffic outside of the US.
Because YMX was too far from YUL, Montreal lost its position as a favored connection point for PAX going from Europe to the US. International Airlines insisted on abandoning YMX for overseas flights because it was too far from downtown and they moved back to YUL in the mid 1990s. YMX was only handling charter traffic, Air Transat included until charter operations were moved back to YUL 2 months ago.

I do remember taking Sabena YMX-BRU flights (on 747) in the late 70s and early 80s on few occasions. I was on my way to other European and Mid-Eastern points. Sabena was known for its very competitive prices & reasonable service. Last time I went to BRU in 2002 , I had to use KLM through AMS.

It would certainly be nice of AC decides to start a daily BRU-YUL service in 2006. But 2006 is still far away and many things canchange up to then......

Thanks JDarby but I know all that as I also went to Mirabel YMX in 2003.
That's what I said, YUL is Pierre Trudeau but everybody knew that already :-)

My question was, do you know if Air Transat is planning to fly from BRU to YUL this summer instead of BRU-YMX since YMX is now closed ?

Thx,

Almost every rumour seems to be eligible for publication in "Travel Magazine". If you cumulate all the rumours that have been published so far in "Travel Magazine", Brussels Zaventem Airport would have been a big player in the airline business and particularly in the airport business!

As far as Air Canada its rumoured Brussels operations is concerned, the answer is no.

Thanks for putting it straight themole.

But is it now 100% sure that ET will start a BRU-YUL flight next year ?

I'm surprised that ET will be doing BRU-YUL and not BRU-YYZ since most of the 'expected' PAX --mainly expatriate Ethiopians, Eritreans & East Africans-- live in/around YYZ. Expatriate Africans who live in/around YUL are mainly from west Africa, not likely to be using the service.
It could also be that ET will be using YUL-BRU leg, like PK on their YYZ-BHX-KHI service, where over 60% of PAX deplane in BHX.

probably ,but market for bru yyz is non existing ,sabena tried twice to open this route bru yyz but it failed ,yyz is already overcrowded and there is no immigrants market for toronto....quebec is second largest belgian community outside belgium and mainly french speaking..as south africa is for dutch speaking people..lot of them have now switched to canadian nationality, but if you make some shopping in montreal ,horeca sector is in the hands of french and belgians !! a lot of flemish farmers also as far as 1000/1500 kms from mtl
but does that mean that ET will have a market ?? Wich planes do they operate to iad and jfk ??

Yes, you are right. There are lots of Belgians in Quebec. I live in YOW and I know that many Belgians are living in Hull, Quebec across the river from us.

Ethiopian only serve IAD via Rome FCO. Untill recently they also served EWR via FCO. Think they use B767-300ER on these routes but not 100% sure

ET uses 763s on its ADD-FCO-IAD route... no traffic rights between FCO and IAD.

Does anyone know if BRU is a go for ET?

I thought ET was planning a BRU-YYZ route ?
Seems more logical for ET to fly to YYZ than to YUL (for the reasons mentioned on this thread)
BRU-YUL should be served daily and we look forward seeing AC on this route again (in partnership with SNBA?) since SNBA is unwilling to seek direct development here !
BTW, YOW is served directly by KL
