New EBBR Scenery

Post by tommeke84 »

Hello flightsimmers,

When I saw all the nice sceneries of other major airports like Schiphol (NL2000) and Charles de Gaulle (RealCDG), I thought it was time to have a detailed Gmax scenery of Brussels as well. Without any knowledge of Gmax, I started with a new EBBR scenery in january 2004. In august I launched my website dedicated to this new scenery. I already posted this information on FSBelgium and on the FSCB forum. But as not everybody visits these wesites, I thought it would be good to post it here as well.

Note: the objects are not yet placed at their exact location, but are placed at the standard export location of Gmax: at the end of runway 34R @ Seattle Tacoma Apt.

You can see the other screenshots and other information on my website: http://users.pandora.be/thomasbogaert/ebbr/. This site is only in Dutch, but an Enlgish version is under construction.

I already spent a lot of time to make all the objects that you can see on my site, and it will still take a lot of time to complete the scenery. An exact release date for the scenery has not been decided yet, but it will at least take to September of next year to completion. I'm still a student, so I have to spend time on my studies as well.

Since a few weeks, Robert Buyssen (the creator of the current EBBR scenery) is working with me on this project. At the moment he's constructing the military part of EBBR (Melsbroek) in Gmax. And I'm doing the old terminal C for the moment. I'm still looking for information on this part. For the textures I'm looking for a frontal picture of terminal C (not the sattelite building) and another picture of the section between terminal C en terminal B (this section includes the Sky Hall). If anyone can help me with this, please let me know.

What you can expect of the new scenery:
-All buildings made with Gmax, with LOD's for optimal performance
-Terminal A with transparant windows and interior scenery objects
-Sabena Technics hangars with animated doors
-Animated ground vehicles of Aviapartner, BGS, LSG Sky Chefs, ...
-Animated gates on terminals A and B
-Animated Radar installations
-(Maybe) Photoreal ground textures
-...

I hope you like the first results. Comments, questions and suggestions are welcome....

Like I said in this post, I can't predict an exact release date, but you shouldn't expect the new scenery before September 2005, partially because I've a lot to do for my studies as well and because there are only 2 people working on this scenery.

Nice initiative!
The jetways are simply great, since in most sceneries they are just some lines with some color :?

There IS already a good freeware scenery! EBBR by Robert Buyssen, to be found on AVsim and many other freeware-FS-sites!

Jense,

Although Robert's scenery is great and well detailed, the technique behind it is outdated. It was build for FS2002 and I think he started development during FS2000.

The GMax is more powerfull and it also possible to generate more details and yet with little impact on the performance. I'm still using Robert's scenery today in FS9, but we miss the power of its scenery engine. When you look at other great freeware sceneries like KBOS, you can see that much more can be achieved. But this takes effort, time and lots of sweat and blood I can imagine :)

Thomas, I've proposed my services for texturing a while ago. But when you send me the textures that you've done already, my jaws felt on the floor like those of Sonny  .

I think it is worth putting time and effort in the typical EBBR apron and runway colors. Such as the white concrete which contours the runways and the nice yellow taxilines with their gatenumbers. Again, the buildings have already been very nicely textured by you!

Keep up the good work Tommy... we appreciate your effort greatly! Maybe a suggestion, why don't you work together with Robert? Or with the guys of Belg 7000?

Hello Vesalius,

Since a few weeks, I'm working together with Robert on this project. As I said, he's doing the military part of EBBR (Melsbroek) now. This way we can share the work load and the scenery will be completed faster.

Although I currently already have Robert's EBBR scenery it's always nice to see people are working on a new an improved version of Belgium's biggest airport.

The screenshots on your website really look awesome. At first I found the screenshot you posted above about the A-Pier really strange because of the see-through windows, but the screenshots on your website changed my mind. It looks more natural on those screenshots than on the one you posted above.

Greetings,
Ivan

I have Robert's EBBR scenery, and I think it is superb! It is nice to see great freeware scenery for FS2002 instead of just FS2004, like you get so often these days.

It's a very nice scenery, maybe even one of the best freeware scenery's that will be available!!! I just adore the fact that you will add working gates it's so much better than static ones!

I wish you a lot of luck to complete this awesome job!!

The scenery of Robert was good for FS2000 and 2002, but it misses a lot of quality and features when you look at other FS2004 sceneries (payware and freeware). This new scenery will only be tested with FS2004, because there are a lot of features that are only compatibel with fs2004 (like specific gmax-animation features).

Hey Tommeke, i have another question. When you park your aircraft at the gate, does the gate come to your aircraft and connect with it?

Just to give you an idea of how the animation will look, I made a movie of the Gmax animation. You can download the movie here:
http://users.pandora.be/thomasbogaert/g ... mation.avi

It's not yet finished. The animation has to be improved.

I wonder how heavy it will be on the FPS issue (frames per second), especially with other add-ons that are quite heavy to run (PMDG 737 for instance).

The impact of the animation on the FPS is hardly noticeable, although I have only tested with 1 gate in FS. Like in RealCDG, I will not animate every gate, but just a few of Terminal A and Terminal B.

I have already done a first test with Photoreal ground textures and here is the first result. It's not perfect, because I still have apply an Alpha channel to the images so the transition to the standard FS environment is less abrupt.

Simply amazing! This will make brussels again an attractive airport in FS as Robert´s original EBBR scenery as many already stated has become obsolete and too much FS98-2000 looking.

I look forward to this scenery as the screenshots look stunning ! Good luck!
