B737-300 damaged due to hailstorm

Post by Avro »

Just minutes after take-off an EasyJet B737-300 has encountered a severe hail storm and came rapidly back to Geneva. On the following pictures you can see the damge on the aircraft.

Note that both cockpit windows are broken 8O

Wow! Rare views! Thanks Chris!

The hail must have been like pigeon eggs at least. Did the tower not know about it before giving authorisation to take off?

I guess that the tower didn't know it, otherwise the aircraft wouldn't have been cleared for take-off :?

But I'm sure the pilots had the fear of their lives. It must have been very impressive to be in the cockpit at that time.

I guess those guys won't forget to switch on weather next time!! Or at least they will now keep clear of red areas
Anyway, it's a pitty for that brand new 737, must be a lot of money to fix it

Do you think they will repair this one or just use it for spares and then throw it away :?:
Have you seen the leading edges, they are completely ruined; must be very expensive :!:
Do you think that Easyjet has insurance for such incidents (or the lessor?)

This reminds me of the hail storm that damaged Air Transat C-FTNA , which by the way is my Avatar ! It never flew again, because the plane was old and to expensive to repair

Here are some other pics of the damage

Well it is still a pretty new aircraft so I doubt it will be used for spares.

The plane doesn't look beyond repair. I'm pretty sure it will be repaired, at the costs of the insurance company (this kind of risk is covered).

Sorry guys   I made a mistake. It's a B737-300 and not a 700. i will correct it above in the topic.

Here are some additional pictures of it.
