Bombay, or Mumbai
Yes, Andre, and great was my surprise when I say Sahara TV, an indian TV station on satelite.sn26567 wrote:Air Sahara? If you did not tell us, I would have thought of them as being an Algerian or Lybian company!
Maybe QCM can explain us why Sahara in India.
Bombay airport's name is: Sahar International Airport, for the international section. Now called "Chhatrapati Shivaji Int'l Airport. (Sahar is easier to remember
The domestic terminals are at the Santa Cruz airport.

BTW you live in Bombay, or Mumbai, QCM ?
At a height of 26 feet above sea level, Mumbai airport serves a big city
(pop., 2001 prelim.: city, 11,914,398; metro. area, 16,368,084), capital of Maharashtra state, western India, formerly Bombay. Located partly on Mumbai Island, it is flanked by Mumbai Harbour and the Arabian Sea. It is India's principal port on that sea and one of the largest and most densely populated cities in the world.
I remember my first arrival in BOM in the early 70's with Sabena's 707 (SN 271?). Once you have the smell of that airport in your nose, you never forget it.
Mumbai remains India's economic hub and the heart of financial and commercial activity, its cultural and education centre, and headquarters of its film industry. Bollywood

The official website of Air Sahara is http://www.airsahara.net/airsahara/index.jsp
Air Sahara is part of the Sahara Group (Sahara in Hindi means shelter), a over Rs.50, 000 crore (US$10.98 billion), and fast approaching towards Rs. 1, 00,000 crores (US$ 21.96 billion), diversified conglomerate...., the Sahara Group has varied business interests such as Infrastructure and Housing, Aviation, Mass Communication, Consumer Products, Public Deposit Mobilisation and Satellite TV channel.
Sahara should not be confused with Sahar airport which is the international airport at Mumbai (Bombay). Its named after the Sahar village on which the airport today stands. The airport has been renamed as Chhatrapati Shivaji Int'l Airport.
Chhatrapati Shivaji (1627AD) is revered as the foremost leader and legend in Maharashtra state which Mumbai is part of. Shivaji founded the Hindu kingdom in the Deccan against all odds , fighting against the mighty Mughals. He inspired and united the common man to fight against the tyranny of Mughal ruler Aurangjeb, by inculcating a sense of pride and nationality in them.
The area surrounding the airport is an undeveloped area of Mumbai and has a lot of hutment dwellers and shanties. Bombay being the commercial hub of India attracts people from all parts of India. Many of them come in search of jobs and a better life. But they find that real estate is beyond them and are forced to live on the roads and in shanties, in miserable conditions and sometimes next to the sewer drains.
But a visitor to Bombay should also see the good side of Bombay and take a look at the teaming middle class. When in Bombay, visit downtown near Flora Fountain, and Bandra west. It would be a good idea for crew having an overnight hault in Bombay to stay in Bandra which is nice and yet not too far from the airport. A good hotel in Bandra is the Taj Lands end.
To answer your question about Mumbai or Bombay...After India’s independence, Bombay became home to many people of different cultures who came from all over India. They came to Bombay seeking wealth and opportunity. Bombay’s new cultural makeup was the reason it was renamed in late 1995. The new name, Mumbai, stands for its new identity as a multi-cultural city. Today, at the end of the 20th century, the city of Mumbai is still growing.
I personally and many locals still prefer calling the city Bombay. And its the politicians who prefer calling it Mumbai!!!

A need but also a must
Talking about Indian airports:
The recent spurt in passenger and cargo traffic at the Indira Gandhi International Airport has further strengthened the dire need for its modernisation and expansion.
The Airports Authority of India seemed to have taken a slew of measures to smoothen the inbound and outbound passenger flow and provided modern amenities.
The international aircraft movement showed a 22% hike with a number of airlines like Air Canada, Turkish Airlines, Pakistan International Airlines and Myanmar Airways, starting operations and many of them increasing their frequencies. Some of them, including Qatar Airways and Korean Air, also started freighter operations.
Private Indian carriers Jet Airways and Air Sahara launched international flights from the IGI Airport, while Indian Airlines, Blue Dart Aviation and Air Sahara increased their flight frequencies.
Note IGI Airport is New Delhi (DEL)
So modernisation is not only a need but a must
