JAL ageing fleet??

Post by ianm1977 »

hi everyone,
i have heard that JAL have quite an old fleet (i know they operate dc's in the u.s.), but how old are their 747-400's and 777's? are they serviced well? are they overdue to be replaced or are they all still okay? any ideas? i have looked on websites but they are incomplete lists of the fleet so i can't really make any judgements for myself, hence the post.

hope you can shed some light for me.

cheers,

Hi ianm1977,

I have the answer to a part of your question.

Their 777's are brandnew (the delivery process is still going on, the final ordered B777 is scheduled for delivery in 2008). Their 747-400's are also not that old... delivered new to JAL between 1990 and 2001.

But they have some older fleet members like some 747-200's and -300's (mostly used for domestic services), of which the oldest one is delivered new to JAL in 1975.

Their DC-10-40's used on services to the United States are built between 1976 and 1983.

They also still have a couple of MD-11's (often used on the Zürich-flight), but JAL is now retiring their final MD-11's. Age of their MD-11's: 8 years average.

Source of all that: JP Airline Fleets.

Regards, Robin Bamps.

thanks for the info, i am flying from LHR to BNE via NRT on 777's and 747 - 400's, and was wondering how old they were as i have heard such good reports about the service, but was worried about the fleet!! (very nervous passneger, me).

thanks for taking the time to reply.

Don't worry ian.
I've never flown with JAL, but from all the comments I've heard so far they seem to be a fine airline and not only on service level but on technical also.
