Planespotting trip to FRA/EDDF (03/07/04 - 04/07/04)

Post by Avro »

Many of you probably know that Sabena_690 , L-1011 and myself went to FRA for some spotting this weekend.

Since we decided to go by train (less polluting ;) ) and not by plane we won't write any trip report.

But for those who are interested I will quickly give a few facts on our train trips:

- BRU-CGN with Thalys
- CGN-FRA with ICE
- FRA-CGN with ICE
- CGN-BRU with Thalys

Between CGN and BRU it was a bit dissapointing, not to travel for a very long time at high speed. :( Further on the seats in the Thalys were less spacious than in the ICE. The ICE's were both very comfortable, clean and new.

We arrived in Frankfurt in the late evening oin Friday or if you prefer very early in the morning on Saturday ( 00:20 ). On saturday morning (7:45) we went as planned to the spotting terrace which is located over T1. The entrance fee is 2 EUR for students and 3 EUR for adults. When we arrived it rained and it was quite cold, but after 1 hour or so the sky cleared up a litlle bit. The terrace is really great. You get to see the planes from very close and you smell a lot of Kerosine :frantic:
Even if it was still not really warm we were kept busy by the planes arriving and departing without any break. It's just fantistic to go spotting and not to be able to tell how many B747's you saw :) We then left the terrace after some 12 hours of spotting at 20:00.
Satruday was a nice spotting day even if we had a few more rain showers through the day.
On sunday we did exactly the same and the weather was much better than the day before. But we had to stop spotting at 15:30 to catch our train back to BRU via CGN.

To conclude we can say that this weekend was really worth it. We saw a lot of nice planes, we had some great fun and some nice weather despite the few showers.

We decided not to post the entire log in the threat for the simple reason that it would be too long and not interesting. BUT we will post the registrations of all the special planes we saw this weekend.
I'll let Frederic do that ;) because I'm still very busy to work on the pictures I made. I hope to upload them soon :)

Thanks for the report, Chris!

After going through my logs this afternoon, I saw that I made 227 new frames!! Very happy with this result...

The combination of the longhaul planes of the Star Alliance being so close to you, with all the action on the 25's in front of you, and with the nice smell of kerosene makes from the terrace the place to be!

A selection of some nice birds:
Image
HL7600 of KE, only delivered to the airline a few weeks ago (maybe boring because KE even flies to BRU, but nevertheless interesting for regspotters ;))

Image
N810AX, together withN59083 and N630AX

Image
N556TZ, together with N559TZ (military charters)

Image
EK-32009, new A320 for Armavia

Image
EP-IBK, recently delivered to IR

Image
VT-AID, recent addition to the AI B744 fleet (this was the last B744 of AI I needed to complete my log). Was there together with VT-ESM, VT-EVJ and...

Image
VT-EGA, a B742

Image
RA-96008 of Aeroflot in the old colours

Image
EZ-A002 of Turkmenistan Airlines (for some reason, there are no recent pictures of this bird)

Image
PP-VTH of Varig, together with PP-VPK, PP-VTI and PP-VQK

Image
CC-CQA of Lanchile, now renamed to LAN

Image
EI-DFH of Alitalia Express (EI-registered, like several of their B772's)

Image
ZS-SNG of SA, delivered 6 months ago

Image
VN-A763 of Vietnam Airlines. I believe that VN will upgrade FRA to B772, starting within a few weeks

Image
V8-RBH of Royal Brunei (caused a lot of stress in the afternoon as we had to make a choice: possibly missing our train, or waiting till it passed in front of the terrace and hurrying afterwards ;))

That's a small selection... As Chris said, making a log is a crazy work, and since no other Belgians were in FRA this weekend, it wouldn't be of any use.

If you have questions around spotting etc, feel free to ask!

Frederic

Maybe I am going to be impolite by asking, but I'll do it any way :? I'll see if you'll anwser it.
How many € did it cost ? (and in what hotel did you stay ?)
I am planning to go to FRA too next year, but I am still looking for a good hotel and the best way to travel there ...
All hints and tips are welcome !

I'll take that one

We stayed in the IBIS hotel which is located near to the airport and has a FREE shuttle. The weekend fare for the summer months is €44.

As for the train, well it all depends on when you book your trip. Actually if you have the chance to get the lowest fares on all the segments yo can do it for about €100 or less, which we did.

Now divide that by the number of planes you can see in 19h of FRA terrace spotting, and it'll be amazingly cheap per plane. Try to compare it with a BRU spotting afternoon with the price of your gasoline  Just kidding.

It's really worth it. And we would have flown the whole way were it not for those outrageous LH fares on BRU-FRA :pang:

ciao,
TriStar

I'll try to give some interesting details of the weekend in the next few days and perhaps a small video, so stay tuned :!:

Thanks for your nice comments everybody :P
Great pictures
Those aren't our pictures yet ;)

I'm currently downloading all 300 pictures and have to take out the best ones, process them in photoshop and then you'll be able to admire the pics I made ;)

I hope that they'll be online at the end of the week. Since I'm working throughout the week, I'm only online in the evening. That's why It'll take some time.

A quick update:

This A.net pic presents to you the dirtiest aircraft that we saw. On this picture it's "cleaner" than when we saw it (Avro should have an actual pic of it).

Again great pics, Chris. And some very rare birds.

Armavia is not common, but what a bleak livery.

NCA is nice! And the Il-96 as well.

You apparently had a very good day.

Waiting impatiently for the next batch!

Thanks for your nice words guys :)

It was also the first time for me to see an Armavia plane. I even didn't knew this airline existed before
