We dont have Ryanairs or EasyJets here. The cheapest aircarrier is not as cheap as some European airlines. For example, a flight from Mexico to Monterrey ( 550 miles, 1.2 hours) will cost you with a discounted airline aproximately $250 dollars and with AeroMexico or Mexicana it costs about $350 usd aprox. Although the service between airlines is very much alike, the diference relies in the airline fleet. Mexicana uses an almost new fleet that consists in A319, A320, B757 and Fokker 100. The 757 are used for long haul flights ( more than 3 hours) while the Airbus is used for high density hubs. AeroMexico uses a fleet of MD80´s, 757,767, and they have just recieved the new Boeing 737-700 with winglets that looks INCREDIBLE!!!. The other carrier is called AVIACSA and it is of lesser quality in airplanes but not in service. They use the 737-200 and the 727-200 Dougan conversion ( with winglets).
Our regional carrier it Aerolitoral and it uses Saab 340 and it has just recieved 5 Ebraer 145 regional jets. The problem with regional flying in Mexico is that it is VERY VERY expensive because there is NO competition. A flight of lets say 1 hour in the Saab will be aproximately $300 euro round trip, the same trip is less than half in the USA since I fly a LOT in the USA and have paid much better rates. Food in better than average and you can have beer without extra cost in all airlines. The VERY good thing about flying in Mexico is that there are extremely punctual and they almost always are ON time. So you can have an idea on how flight between Mexico are I can tell you that the aveerage flight is well below 2 hours and the longest from tip to tip is about 4 hours or so. Flying in Mexico is great but try to avoid flying in the afternoon in the summer months since we have HUGE storms with hail and everything
