I have always said only 2 airports really make sense in Belgium: Brussels Airport and Liege Airport for cargo.
Principally CRL doesn't make economic sense either, but the airport has 10,5 million passengers a year and creates a lot of jobs in a region where jobs are rather scarse. So it's acceptable.
ANR only has 300k passengers a year and the region isn't exactly low on jobs.
That's the economic side of it. A second side is the practical side. Practically the 300k passengers of Antwerp can easily be handled by BRU, either normal pax or general aviation. The 10,5 million passengers from CRL would put a big strain on BRU's handling and are the type of passengers BRU should consider as an extra, not the type to go after.

Antwerp Airport will host the return of its popular aviation gathering on May 16 and 17, as the 31st edition of the Fly In event takes place under a new identity: “Stampe Forever”.
After taking a break in 2025, the long-running event returns with a renewed focus on preserving Belgium’s aviation heritage, particularly the legacy of the iconic Stampe-Vertongen SV-4, the historic biplane closely associated with Antwerp’s aviation industry.
The Fly In was originally organised for decades by the Stampe & Vertongen Museum under the leadership of aviation enthusiast Danny Cabooter. Following strong public demand after last year’s hiatus, the event has been revived by organisers Dirk Spitaels, Dommy Van Den Heuvel and Bernard Van Milders through the newly created “Stampe Forever” initiative.
Unlike major commercial airshows, the Deurne Fly In focuses on close public access to aircraft and aviation history, combining static displays with flying demonstrations. Visitors will be able to walk among both historic and modern aircraft and meet pilots and restoration teams.
A major attraction of the 2026 edition will be the participation of the Belgian Air Force as part of celebrations marking its 80th anniversary. The military will display an Airbus A400M Atlas transport aircraft, which visitors will be able to tour internally.
Flying demonstrations are expected to include several historic warbirds, among them the Supermarine Spitfire, Hawker Sea Fury, Curtiss P-40 Warhawk and Fouga CM.170 Magister, alongside formation flights by multiple SV-4 aircraft.
The event runs daily from 10:00 to 17:30. Advance tickets are available online, while children under 12 accompanied by an adult can enter free of charge.
