CRL Third-Worst Airport in Europe” According to Google Maps Users

https://www.hln.be/reizen/charleroi-op- ... sh7uWyowwg

User complaints focus on several recurring issues:

- Accessibility: No direct train connection to Brussels
- Infrastructure and hygiene: Dirty or poorly maintained toilets, cramped waiting areas, and few seats.
- Services and facilities: Very limited food & drink options, overpriced water bottles and frequent issues with payment machines in the parking lots.
- Strikes and delays: Repeated strikes by ground staff and airline workers cause long queues at check-in and security.

It's very anecdotical, but I just had this conversation yesterday with a friend who needs to get to Bologna.
If you live in Brussels, you can pay slightly more and fly from BRU, connection by STIB and train.
Or, for €20 less you need to get a shuttle from Midi Station to end up in CRL.
I think for more and more people, the experience in CRL and the hassle getting there, are no longer sufficiently offset by the price.

And the security check in the tent before you get in... if it's still there.
And the "tourniquet" where you have to pass with your luggage.
And the distant parking lots.

It is very anecdotal I also spoke to a friend yesterday that lives in AMS he dislikes CRL but because of a departure tax of 60-70€ in AMS he can do 2 trips out of CRL instead of 1 from AMS.

It also depends on the destination I have to go to Turin end of August and the easiest was with FR since SN doesn’t fly anymore to TRN and I will admit that FR and W6 give a whole range of direct destinations that don’t exist from BRU or you have to transfer - and that is also added time.
I would also wish that SN would also expand their destination offering…Flibco is overly expensive for what it is and the duration it takes in my opinion. It would be good if they do improve connectivity to CRL from other parts of the country and neighbouring countries.

However, I do think that since they opened the 2 terminal it has improved but paying for the toilets is indeed annoying. But something must be going well for them if the passenger numbers are increasing.

Only on the land side. And very easy with a credit card. It costs 1 euro, not more than at a highway parking.

On the air side, the toilets are free.

CRL indeed plays in a lower categor to tie.
But they have some strong points. Most importantly many European destinations.
BRU and SN have dropped a big number of business destinations: like Turin, Bordeaux, UK cities.
Another strong point is punctuality.

many biz people travel via CRL. Also professionals like technicians, coaches..
CS's idea to channel as many as possible PAX via FRA or MUC... Is medieval.
BRU has hardly 15% transfer PAX vs 30 % for an airport of same category

CRL grows a lot faster than BRU.
That. says it all.
