Boeing 757 production line to close down?
Read on Justplanes today:
"Continental (Jul16, 2003)
Is renegotiating the delivery of 11 Boeing 757s scheduled to arrive between 2005 and 2006. Because Continental is the only airline scheduled to take delivery of 757s in those years and because Boeing has not received a new order for the aircraft since New Year's Eve of 2001, the company is considering closing the 757 production line as early as next summer."
Closing down the production line of one of its products should be a serious decision for Boeing. Is this already an indication that the 7E7 project (the "dreamliner") will be launched officially?
On the other hand, the 767 line will be kept alive with Pentagon orders. An initial order for about 100 KC-767 tankers is imminent, with more to follow. Moreover the 767 will be the airframe for the new electronic warfare and command fleet of the USAF. And last but not least, the 767 is also the favourite contender for the replacement of the E3 Awacs planes, with the Japanese Air Force already operating 4 E-767 Awacs planes.
The 747 line is perhaps also nearing sunset, with the A380 taking most of the orders for new jumbo planes.
The 737 is off course still running well.

In contrast with the 757, there are still new orders for the 717. And to me it is a quite nice and quiet plane, thanks to its engines in the back. The 3-2 seating is in any case more comfortable than 3-3. Long life to the offspring of the DC9.dolfke wrote:and what about the 717 line? If they close it fast enough (as there don't seem to be that many being sold) ...

There're not so many orders for the B717. Closing down that line shouldn't be that bad business decision.
Anyway, Boeing is in my opinion facing difficult times. The competition with Airbus, which can offer a total range of aircraft, won't be easy with only the 737 and (maybe) the 7E7 in portfolio.
Let's make a guess ...
Boeing will make some money with Pentagon orders, and than try to merge with ... let's say ... Embraer. The Embraer planes than all get a Boeing name (let's name the Emb 135-140-150 series Boeing 787-100, 787-200 and 787-300 and let's name the Emb 170-175-...-190 series Boeing 797-100, 797-200 and so on ....).
The combination of Boeing 737, 7E7, 787 and 797 will give Boeing the opportunity to also offer airlines a full range of aircraft ....
Maybe I also should stop licking these froggs ...

I think Boeing has got a dark future ahead. For the moment it hasn't got a civil aircraft in progress, neither do they have a military one. I think Boeing needs to survive the next 10 to 15 years on American State funds , things like those 767 or their X-projects. The first new aircraft can be delivered within, let's say, 7 years (still needing to be developped, first flight tests...)? During that time they can only produce the 737 and some derivatives from the 767 and 777. Although I think it will be just about the first two, because the last one is just to expensive. And even the 737 will not be such a succes anymore: if low-cost airliners allready prefer to buy new Airbusses, instead of buying second hand Boeings! I think Boeings will just replace the over-aged Tupolevs and Antonovs in Africa and the East. I hope Boeing saved a lot of money during their days of glory.
Are you joking? The A321 looks much better than the B757. (That's why it has the letter A and the 757 the letter Bnwa757 wrote:Is the A321 doing well? It looks kinda like a 757. But it still can't replace the 757 in my heart. :cry2:
The A321 is a real plane, large, comfortable. The B757 is in the Boeing tradition: narrower, i.e. you have less elbow room. Decades ago there was already the same kind of difference between the A310 and the early versions of the B767. I speak of experience.

The A321 is a commercial succes, especially among the charter airlines in Europe.
As far as I know, Boeing doesn't have a product with a similar capacity in combination with that range.
I think that it's clear that the B757 line has had it. No orders for several years, and a final development (757-300) which can hardly seen as a commercial succes.
The 767 story is the same (with the 767-400 series proving not being popular), but that line is kept alive or will be kept alive with Pentagon orders.
Bad luck Boeing !!!

A time ago i heard on the news that Airbus is almost bigger than Boeing!
The reason fot that is that Airbus much nicer en comfortable planes have than Boeing (i think)
In the Sabena time i whas sitting one time on the A321; what a nice plane, so much comfort!!! And nice food and drinks!! :drink:

Airbus is not bigger than Boeing, but they grow faster than Boeing.
The reason for that is not because the Airbus family is nicer, as you mentioned. The companies don't buy an aircraft because it's nice but because it suits bests in their current fleet.
Indeed Airbuses are very comfortable

That's what I wrote: the A320 family is wider than the B737 or the B757: that makes the seats more comfortable.vliegtuigfreak wrote:A time ago i heard on the news that Airbus is almost bigger than Boeing! The reason fot that is that Airbus much nicer en comfortable planes have than Boeing (i think)
Yes, I agree. Food and drinks in Sabena times were way above what you get now on any airline. Times are hardvliegtuigfreak wrote:In the Sabena time i whas sitting one time on the A321; what a nice plane, so much comfort!!! And nice food and drinks!!
But that has nothing to do with comfort...

I also think the A318/319/320/321 is more comfortable than the 757. In fact I like the Airbus family so much that my username on www.avsim.com is NWA Airbus
Onward and Upward...
Then, why do you say earlier in this thread that nothing can replace the 757 in your hart? There is nothing wrong in changing opinions if you can justify itnwa757 wrote:I also think the A318/319/320/321 is more comfortable than the 757.
