Not necessarily, could be operational!

Hi all,

On luchtvaartnieuws there is an article on the plans of SN in Africa.

https://www.luchtvaartnieuws.nl/nieuws/ ... -uitbouwen

Anyone has access to it, and can summarize it? The intro reads as follows:

"Brussels Airport moet in de toekomst nadrukkelijk dé hub worden voor vluchten van en naar Afrika. Niet alleen voor Europese passagiers, maar ook voor reizigers uit Noord-Amerika. Dat doel beoogt topvrouw Dorothea von Boxberg, die sinds april vorig jaar aan het roer staat bij Brussels Airlines. “We gaan daarom ons netwerk uitbreiden en meer vluchten aanbieden”, zegt ze in Luchtvaartnieuws Magazine."

"In the future, Brussels Airport must emphatically become the hub for flights to and from Africa. Not only for European passengers, but also for travelers from North America. That is the goal of CEO Dorothea von Boxberg, who has been at the helm of Brussels Airlines since April last year. “We are therefore going to expand our network and offer more flights,” she says in Aviation News Magazine."

It's more or less the same as what we discussed here already before. To add more African destinations, to let grow the long haul fleet, and the negotiations with UA to open the routes from Houston and Boston to Brussels. But also to have one extra, and last destination from Canada.

Houston, Boston and I'm guessing Vancouver? That would be wild 😂

Three-day flight attendant strike between 28 February and 1 March, the never-ending discussion between management and unions. And another hot Summer coming up. You can have all the plans that you want, first you need happy staff.

In recent weeks we only learned about cancellations and or reduction of destinations and frequencies.
And strikes, delays etc.

I am rather pessimistic for SN

Maybe this is in the wrong place but does anyone have any idea when the financial results of SN will be published?

If you mean for 2023, it'll be posted on March 7 at 7 am CET for the whole LH Group.

It''s a real crisis at this moment.
Belgian pilots, mostly copilots, are leaving for other skies (major airlines, in the Middle East,...).
Hiring new guys is difficult. Especially at the conditions Belgian airlines offer.
After learning this news, Aviation24.be had a conversation with a Brussels Airlines spokesperson: in the last 6 months, 20 pilots left the company. In the same period, 40 new pilots were hired and some are to be accepted in the near future.

Demand and offer, says the spokesperson, who said that there will be a capacity reduction on Birmingham, Berlin and Warsaw but the airline added Krakow in the portfolio as well as some extra frequencies to popular summer destinations.
Warsaw just received 5 extra flights. To reduce already?
CityJet will lease 5 planes to LH for summer season.
Why can SN not do this and keep existing destinations instead of cancelling.

LH is flying some regional routes to MUC, where there is no real LCC competition.
Brussels is a high LCC spot and SN is competing against Ryanair and Wizz. So would it make sense to wet lease A320 to fill it? What would be the yield expectations?
The local market in Belgium is like that - if you claim new aircraft, better income for employees etc these are all cost factors which would need to be covered in the ticket prices. But if the market as shaped in a different direction, you need to live with the results.

One year ago SN was proud to announce Billund, Bordeaux etc and the leasing agreement with CityJet.
Now they cancel and reduce.

That is very inconsistent.

And we talk about Cityjet CRJ1000 jets.
Not A320.

Correct, but the impact is minimal, eg a 10% salary increase for every employee would increase the ticket price by 1,5% or less than 1€ for the majority of tickets on routes with LCC competition.

Not A320.
The strategy is all A320.
CRJ May have been a feeling consideration and didn't worked out.
Or, they can earn in wetlease more being located in MUC - the 380 are back and need to be filled.

From a group prospective it may be the better economical decision.

So no inconsistency, but prioritisation in a year with constraints in the fleet due to BEO engine issues.

Although I'm just an aviation enthousiast and don't know a lot about this topic, I have the feeling the A320 is too big on many routes, that's why they stopped flying to Billund, Bordeaux, Birmingham... (and Nantes, Nurenberg, Hannover, Bremen, Belfast, Bristol, Strasbourg, Zagreb... that were flown before).

And maybe it's not economically the best to fly there with A320, but maybe with smaller aircraft it would be?

Also, I read that they want A320 to have P2P traffic, which is good for leisure destinations, but since they have long haul, I don't think this is the best idea... You need to fill those big planes.

I completely share your opinion, that’s why I think we need to think about using turboprops for the reasons I mentioned before.

Really the worst strategy. You need much smaller aircraft to feed your hub. The A220 would be a perfect plane for that.

If only A320, even they are economical, you will not make profit when the LF will be less then half on certain routes. Certain of the current dropped destinations were feeder flights. For even extra frequencies during the day the A320 will be too big.

Look at KLM, AF, etc who has a Subfleet of smaller aircraft to feed their hub.

As said, this is the worst strategy. 2 types of aircraft in the fleet, dropping feeder flights, on this way the marketshare of SN will be never high.

Also each one or two years another CEO is not helping them bcs the long term vision is missing. Each new CEO has a different opinion.
Stability, trust and long term vision is needed

I totally agree with that. A220 will be necessary on a lot of destinations.
But..; the problem is still how SN is considered in STAR.
Coming back BKK-MUC yesterday A388 overbooked in any classes.
Try to book BRU-BKK on SN and Austrian Website.... two different prices
If SN give a price ..... (still running after 5 min and tried twice, it's always 10-15% cheaper on OS Web site....
Nothing new, no further comments needed....
