SkyTeam : Is Malaysia Airlines a feasible candidate?

Post by Langkawi »

Hi to all,

As you all know, Malaysia Airlines (MH) is not a member of any of the big 3 alliances. From what I gathered, the company is not eyeing on joining either Star, Oneworld or SkyTeam in the near future. I personally do not agree with MH - unless MH joins any alliance, Kuala Lumpur international airport could never compete with Bangkok and Singapore as an important hub. I personally think that the new KL airport is one of the best airports I've been to, but unfortunately now operating below its intended capacity and in danger of turning into a white elephant :(

It's almost impossible for MH to join Star Alliance as Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways are just at its doorstep. Oneworld alliance on the other hand, would probably not be in the interest of British Airways and Qantas as the latter already has its own hub in Singapore and the Kangaroo Route has already been well served by both airlines. Flights to China/Japan/Korea are already well served by Cathay Pacific.

This leaves only SkyTeam. Since Malaysia Airlines already has codeshare flights and airmiles agreement with both KLM and Northwest, I think it would be great if MH joins SkyTeam. Perhaps the management of MH will change their mind about not joining any alliance after KLM and Northwest become full member of SkyTeam which I believe would happen very soon.

At present the only airline in SkyTeam that flies to Australia/New Zealand is Korean Air, but it does not lie in the "traditional" Kangaroo Route via Southeast Asia. KLM now flies between Kuala Lumpur and Sydney (maybe other australian cities too?) operated by Malaysia Airlines via codeshare agreement. Neither Air France / Alitalia / Czech Airlines fly to Australia, so having Kuala Lumpur as a hub to Australia and Southeast Asia would be in the interest of all of these airlines.

I would really appreciate if you could give me some feedback on any of these issues :-

- Do you think Malaysia Airlines is a suitable candidate for SkyTeam?
- What are the benefits to other SkyTeam members if MH joins the alliance?
- Do you agree that Malaysia Airlines has no chance in Star / Oneworld?
- Or anything else regarding this issue

Thank you.

Apparently oneworld or star is out of the question.

Skyteam seems to make sense, but then my question is whether KUL a well-established hub at its current state?

I think SkyTeam is the best choice for MAS as their partner KLM Royal Dutch & NWA will soon join the not so active alliance. I got around 14000 miles on Worldperks now. I got all these points thru MAS domestic flights (between Kuala Lumpur & Kota Kinabalu). But they signed a new agreement with both KLM Flying Dutchman & NWA Worldperks last year in May. Now, i no longer can earn miles on MAS domestic flight. So, i have to fly MAS international flight at least once in 3-year so that my remaining mileage in Worldperks will not expired. I hope both MAS & NWA will join Skyteam a.s.a.p & they will renew their frequent flyer agreement so that i can continue to earn & use Worldperks miles on MAS domestic flight.

KLM uses it for her connections to Australia (Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne) and New Zealand (Auckland), so I think if MAS will join Skyteam, KUL will be firm rival to SIN. So Skyteam is possible able to increase to Asia, and Australia / New Zealand. So is KUL able to increase her capacty. It would be a perfect idea.

-Yes, since they offer good connections to Australia and New Zealand as a competitor to BA.
-If it becomes one FF-program, I think it would be perfect.
-Yes, because both Star/Oneworld has already good connections all over the world, especially Star alliance.
- MAS is a good new member for Skyteam. Skyteam is rather small in comparison to Oneworld/Star Alliance. If MAS will join, i think it will be a good competitor to the rest. Skyteam has then South America(aeromexiceo/AF), N. America (Delta/KLM), Europe (AF/KL/AZ/CSA), Africa (KL/AF) Asia (KE/MAS/KL/AF).

Skyteam... not so active?
Skyteam... rather small?

Hum... correct me if I'm wrong but before the end of the year with NWA, CO, KLM and possibly Aeroflot, Malev or Kenyan joining the alliance, it should have become WAY bigger than OneWorld...

Yes, after all the major carriers join SkyTeam, it will be bigger than OneWorld. As for now. It is still not a very active & small compare to Star Alliance & OneWorld.

If they join any alliance I would say Sky Team. Oneworld is an outsider and Star a no no, since they alreday have SQ and Thai in the region

The logic seems good. Just curious, is Star Alliance or Skyteam bigger than OneWorld in terms of # of flights/aircraft????

And what do you think about South América ? Skyteam have no partner yet and some months ago TAM Brasil looked to be the candidat. I've heard that Spanair - Portugalia will join skyteam, not you ?

Spanair is owned at 95% by SAS.
Portugalia had the choice to keep codeshares with Air Europa (future ST member) and Air France, or to merge with TAP and codeshares with Spanair. As you know, Portugalia choose the later...

So both TAP (+ Portugalia) and Spanair will stay with Star Alliance.

Air Europa sreads codesharing with AF and other ST partners and focus the development on long hauls (China, South America, etc...)

ASK is a statistical term.
An aircraft has 100 seats.
It flies 10000km to 3 destinations. You have 1 seat/100km. But you do not know whereto.
It's more relevant to have km/seat, that gives you a way to calculate average cost per seat and per aircraft type, eventually per network (in Europe, EUR-Asia, EUR-Africa) and compare if a type of aircraft is more profitable.

But as you will have noticed, this is only possible to calculate a posteriori, because you need the exact figures of mileage and costs.

Because there is no new partners.

Skyteam will welcome this year China Southern Airlines, Aeroflot, Air Europa to name a few...
