The FAA says some undelivered Boeing 787 Dreamliners have a new manufacturing quality issue that the manufacturer will fix before the planes will be delivered.

Boeing expects the newly discovered 787 defect to take at least 3 weeks to address, say people familiar with the problem. That means its customers may not get new Dreamliners for much of the traditionally busy summer travel season. Boeing says that'll require a temporary production rate drop below 5/month and result in delivery of fewer than half of the 787s in inventory this year, which stands at 14 now.

US House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee said they had asked for a government review of the FAA oversight of the B787.

Meanwhile, Boeing is further slowing down the production of B787s, as it addresses defects. Boeing is also holding off completing the new widebody jets at its factory in North Charleston, as it addresses problems related to areas surrounding passenger and cargo doors. The "Dreamliner", really?

American Airlines and Boeing agreed to defer the delivery of certain B787-9s previously scheduled for delivery beginning in January 2023. Pursuant to this amendment, deliveries of these 787-9 aircraft will commence in 4Q 2023 and will continue into 2027, with four B787-9s now scheduled for delivery in 2023.

FAA will retain the authority to issue airworthiness certificates for all B787s and perform final inspections on newly produced B787s until it is confident that “Boeing’s quality control and manufacturing processes consistently produce B787s that meet FAA design standards.”

Boeing is yet to see any respite from a freeze in deliveries of its B787s – but that has not stopped it from testing suppliers’ capacity to meet output scenarios as high as seven a month by end-2023.

American Airlines is planning for the delivery of only seven B787-8s in 2H 2022, with the remaining six B787-8s in 2023. The four B787-9s previously planned in late 2023 are now planned to be delivered in 2024. The expected total aircraft CapEx is now US$1.8 billion in 2022 and $2.2 billion in 2023.

Emirates said deliveries of B787s it has ordered are delayed by at least a year until 2024 and that it could be even longer due to the plane maker’s continued delivery suspension over structural flaws.
