I think that for OneWorld it's strategical to have Swiss on their side, because they don't have any memebr in that european region :!: If LX joins StarAlliance, they (StarAlliance) would get dominant in central europe, and would have a hard to penetrate market for the OneWorld alliance.

I think that in the future, we can expect that all airlines part of one alliance will eventually merge , so that the number of global players will be reduced to 5 or 6, which seems logical, in terms of cost savings. In that perspective, OneWorld should do everything it can to get slots in a central european airport, as it has none :!:

Now chances are really high that SWISS will hook up with Lufthansa, but then at the moment none of the party has confirmed any discussion or exchange between the two.

But due to my very limited knowledge on the aviaition world in Europe  ...I will be very grateful if somebody can kindly give me an "education" on the competitive dynamics there, say, who are the major players/ hubs?? and how competitive things are, etc... :D :D

And as a sidenote, some discussion in a Hong Kong based aviation forum has indicated that Gulf Air, a forerunner of oneworld's middle east membership candidate, may opt to join STAR ; and since this info comes from a local employee there, i guess it can be trusted to a certain extent....

:D

I doesn't really surprises me that LX won't join the OneWorld alliance.
BA was interested but not more than that. If LX doesn't want to complain with their rules, they won't want to go any further.
I'm pretty sure that LX will sooner or later join the Star alliance.

Since BA won't have a foot on the mainland yet, they will probably get more and more interested in BRU and SN. This will most probably give the opportunity to SN to join the OneWorld alliance. In my opinion SN is more interesting for BA than LX, since they have a very strong African network, and are based in the capital of Europe (between CDG and AMS).
