BRU 16/12/2021: EUCO (spotting opportunity)

Post by Xan »

Brussels spotting opportunity:

- what: EU COUNCIL meeting (aka Leaders Meeting = board that leads the EU consisting of the elected heads of state/government of the member states, short EUCO - current Leaders: https://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/euro ... l/members/) (note that EU Commission chairman von der Leyen is present too for the purpose of information flow, but has no vote. Roughly speaking: the EU COUNCIL makes policy decisions and the Commission then takes care of day to day business within this framework)

- where: Brussels (albeit that during Covid it sometimes is by video conference)

- when: 16 December 2021 (EUCO meeting normally lasts 2 days, but this one seems to be scheduled for 1 day)

- starts at : - preliminary (may change) 10 AM (so the Leaders will be arriving ahead of that - I assume that some Leaders of the farther away member states might arrive the previous afternoon or evening and stay the night in Brussels)

- ends at : keep an eye on the - yet to be announced - start time of the press briefing by EU COUNCIL President Charles Michel and EU COMMISSION president Ursula von der Leyen following the meeting to know when the meeting is concluded and leaders are leaving https://video.consilium.europa.eu/event/en/25242. You can also follow tweets (look for https://twitter.com/hashtag/euco?lang=en) and https://www.politico.eu/ usually has a running commentary of the EU COUNCIL meetings, which tells you when the meeting is over and therefore when you can expect leaders to start flying out of Brussels.

- interesting because: elected heads of state/government of the member states will be flying in to Brussels, so good spotting opportunity of government airplanes of the member states

- what is this meeting about?

Since I can't edit my post: this is Politico's running commentary of the EU Council meeting to find out when the meeting ends and thus when Leaders will be departing from Brussels airport.

As I can see, government flights are not subject to the night curfew!

@andre,

Of course not for the governmental planes 😉. In first instance there is no actual curfew... There is only restrictions for noisier categories airctaft + maximum quotum of night flights and just as many exceptions (by instance... If u pay and fullfill the conditions.. U can fly 🤣).
For instance B747, B777 (A330 ? ) have such restrictions in night hours, but its not impossible.

Noteworthy is that any government or military flight (except from banned/embargoed regime) is eccempted from this rule. Same goes for disaster relief flights/humanitarian/medical/rescue flights.

Aircraft like that IL76 classic are generally banned in Belgium and most of EU... The reason it was allowed in was because it was military flight for diplomatic/governmental support. So those flights will be allowed under previous discussed consent.

Greets,

Yann
