short final cockpit voices question.

HI guys,

I have a new, yet another exciting question.

I was looking at some movies here at luchtzak. And in some movie about pilot's perspective on short finals. Anyway in the cockpit there's a computer voice (?) and he counts the distance between the a/c and the rwy. It goes like this:

"30", "20" (and at the touchdown) he says something like "re-time, or break time or I don't know"

My question is what does he says after he stops counting. the "re-time, break time" thing...

Capt,

First the voice announces the heights in feet: 400 feet, 100 feet, 50, 40, 30,...

Then I think that the voice says: 'retard - retard' and according to a pilot it means that you need to give enough thrust to the engines in case of a possible go-around. If the engines are full idle during the landing it takes quite some time before the engines are fully spooned up (iso slamming in the ground).

Please correct me if needed ;-)

That's a very plausible and interesting explanation you give Bart.

I always thought (But I think I'm wrong ;) ) that the voice said something like (re-tire) and that the pilot should give the plane a nose up attidue, to be sure that the main gears will touch down first.
At least if you watch the videos, you will most of the time notice that the noise goes up a little when the cockpit voice says that sound. It's probably just a coincidence.

I think the Retard call is proper to new airbus and is just a reminder to tell pilots it's time to put thrust levers in idle position, in accordance with what the computer already did.

THe call is retard, and is indeed to put the thrust levers to idle This a call made in the Airbus family type aircraft, I don't think Boeing hass the retard call.
The autothrust system disconnects on touchdown and you don't want to give thrust when touching down. (only reverse thrust)
The 50-40-20 calls is the altitude above the runway given by the radio altimeter. Not the same thing as the altitude on your normal altimeter.
And Luchtzak, they don't need to spool up the engines, it's too late for a go around on that altitude, in most cases they have past their descison altitude (or past the call minimums, also given by the computer generated voice). The only occasion they spool up their engines when laning, is when landing on an aircraft carrier.
