A330 is not a competitor of the B777. A330, was an upgrade of the A300 / A310 family to compete, the B767.
The A340 was the competitor of the B777. The B777 has "killed" both A340s and MD11s

A340-600: B777-300 / 300ER

Starting, early 2000s, some airlines started to replace, their B767s, by A330s (Air France or KLM ). Boeing has tried to react with the B767-400. Finally, they have started the B787-8s / B787-9s. The B787-10s, is probably to replace, the B777-200ER
