Since you asked: I seem to remember looking into this some time ago, and learning that the Brits started out with "tire", only to change to "tyre" later on. Surprising as it might seem to some, I cannot be really bothered.

In Queen's English, a lorry has tyres and drives on a motorway.

In Americanese, a truck has tires and drives on a highway.

Two different countries, separated by the same language.
(Besides not driving on the same side.)
At top political level there are also some capillary distinctions but this remark is primarily superficial.

Runaway Ukraine Intl Boeing 737-800 (UR-PSR) which was awaiting push-back at Tel Aviv-Intl AP (LLBG), Israel for flight #PS782 to Kiev when the towbar disconnects from the tug. The 737 rolled backward w/out guidance until the pilots put on the brakes.
