I loved it so much to see Jan land the PC6 on rwy 12 and clear (it was not yet 'vacate' at that time) the runway via twy A (the old A) without backtrack. You have to know the EBAW airfield well, to understand how spectacular that was!
And I still remember clearly the day his son Kim crashed in Berchem. Such a wonderful, lovely guy and an excellent pilot. I wish we had some more beers in the pitabar in Mortsel, the week before you died....

It saddens me to see these rumors again, without solid proof. History and the truth have their rights, so hopefully soon the truth will come out. One way or the other..

That Mr. Hammarskjölds massacre will not be soon unveiled has been clear to me for a long while. Too many consciences burnt there. ((nothing to see with aviation , but his diary "Vägmärken" is worth a profound read - I digested it with difficulty at age 17))

As for landing at EBAW 12 - become 11, since - and exit via TWY A, I saw that done by D-FBAW but that one was in a class of itself of course. Even in that venerable An-2 it was remarkable.

And as for the crash in Berchem: was that the one "brilliant" instructor who had the student switch off the engine deliberately, right after take-off, and couldn't get it to start again (and killing the twain on the Diksmuidelaan)? After which came a NOTAM limiting this exercise to the other side of the runway?

Well, it is 'news' as in 'all over the place = journals', not as in 'news based on truth'. Was wondering if it would make TV news tonight, if the rest of the worldnews was a bit calm today...

Anyway, back to aviation:

You're sure you saw D-FBAW do that with the old twy A, so on about 100m of rwy (otherwise you needed a backtrack)? If so, I wish I could have seen that, as the An-2 is much larger than the PC6 (not really small by itself as a single engine plane)

And as for the crash in Berchem

I should have been more clear; memories came back while I was typing, but didn't think about including any to avoid the confusing with the one from years later, you described. I still have the image clearly in my (fading) memory of the Brasilia rather low and in a rather unusual attitude and manner of flying, when it flew over me, while I was driving my car near the airport. Only a couple of hours later, I found out that this 'sighting' was moments after the mid-air the Brasilia had with the Aerostar, killing all 4 in the Aerostar.
Stupid accident. I knew 3 of the 4 on board. RIP

The memory of D-FBAW is quite clear, if only because it was really spectacular - but memory is fading here, too And yes the An-2 may be heavier than the worthy Porter, but it is also very very slow. 100m runway seems plenty for it, by all accounts!

As for the accidents: the one you mention must have passed me by at that time, I only learned of it much later, Doesn't make it less sad or less stupid, no indeed. But I cannot help feeling it occurred later than the one I thought of, would have to check at the well-known place.

Sabena Technics (France) decided to invest in a new hangar in its facility at Bordeaux-Merignac Airport, to be operational by January 2020. The 10,000 m² hangar will be able to accommodate, in maintenance or modifications activities, aircraft up to A350-1000 or B777-9X.
